Chapter 22 - TESSA’S LETTER

Lily opened the letter at twenty.

Not because I encouraged it.

Because she was ready.

Tessa wrote:

I used the word protection because I wanted custody.

Lily stopped.

No excuses.

Then:

I convinced myself Gabriel was too angry to raise you, and every real flaw I found in him made the lie easier to build.

Lily looked at me.

“Accurate.”

“Unfortunately.”

She continued.

I was also afraid of losing the role the trust gave me in my imagination. The role was smaller than I pretended. I wanted the family to need me.

Then:

The money mattered. The Lake Rowan fee mattered. But if I say I hurt you only for money, I’m lying. I wanted to beat Gabriel. I wanted Mom to choose me. I wanted Dad to stop treating Hannah as the daughter who was always right even after she died.

Ugly.

Human.

Then:

You became the person I used to settle fights with dead people.

Lily closed her eyes.

That sentence landed.

Finally:

There is nothing you need to give me in return for reading this.

Lily folded the letter.

“Do I believe her?”

“Your choice.”

“Do you?”

“I believe some people become more truthful after consequences because lying stops working.”

“That’s not yes.”

“No.”

She smiled slightly.

“Good answer.”

She did not respond.

Not yet.

Tessa completed her sentence several years later.

Supervised release.

No trust role.

No company role.

No contact without Lily’s consent.

Lily said no.

At twenty-four:

Still no.

At twenty-seven:

One video call.

Tessa looked older.

Less polished.

Lily asked:

“Did you hate me?”

Tessa cried.

“No.”

“Did you hate Dad?”

“Yes.”

“More than you loved me?”

“At that time, yes.”

Truth.

Lily nodded.

“Okay.”

The call lasted sixteen minutes.

No second one scheduled.

No forgiveness.

May you like

No hug.

But the question no longer lived unanswered.
