Chapter 19 - ELEANOR’S LETTER

Lily was ten when she read Eleanor’s first letter.

We did it with Elise present.

No surprise mail.

No guilt delivered directly to a child.

Eleanor wrote:

Lily,

I said your father was ruining the family when what I meant was that I was afraid of losing control over how the family worked.

Lily stopped.

“What does that mean?”

I answered:

“She wanted things to stay the way she understood them.”

“That’s dumb.”

“Yes.”

Elise gave me a look.

“What?”

She almost smiled.

Eleanor continued.

I told myself Tessa was helping you remember your mother. Really, we were telling you what your mother would have wanted without letting you have your own feelings.

Lily’s face changed.

Then:

I called you a brat because I was angry at your father. You were four. That was cruel.

Lily folded the letter.

“Does she say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Does she say why Aunt Tessa hit me?”

“She says she should have stopped her.”

“That’s not why.”

“No.”

Lily finished.

At the end:

You do not owe me a visit because I am your grandmother.

Lily looked at Elise.

“Can I believe that part?”

“You can test it.”

“How?”

“Say no.”

Lily wrote:

I’m not ready.

Eleanor replied through counsel:

I understand.

No extra message.

No pressure.

First test passed.

Months later Lily allowed a supervised video call.

Eleanor looked older.

No jewelry except wedding ring.

She cried when Lily appeared.

Lily asked:

“Why did you tell Tessa to use Mommy?”

Eleanor took time.

“Because you loved your mother and I thought her memory would make you listen.”

“Did Mommy want me to say Daddy is scary?”

“No.”

“Did you know that?”

“Yes.”

There.

Lily nodded.

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness.

Information.

Call ended after twelve minutes.

Lily went outside and rode her bike.

Children can close doors faster than adults.

Then Martin requested a letter.

Lily refused.

Different people.

Different pace.

Good.
