Chapter 3

PART 3 — The Man Daniel Pretended to Be

The black SUV rolled to a smooth stop in the center of my driveway.

Every conversation died.

Even the police officers turned.

The driver stepped out first, opening the rear passenger door with practiced precision.

Out stepped Richard Whitmore.

Chairman of Whitmore Technologies.

The man whose signature appeared on every major decision our company had made for the last twenty years.

Daniel went completely still.

"No..."

Richard wasn't looking at him.

He walked directly toward me.

When he reached me, he smiled warmly.

"Emma."

"I'm sorry I couldn't get here sooner."

He hugged me like family.

Because he was.

The wedding guests looked utterly confused.

Lauren frowned.

"I thought..."

"...she owned the company."

Richard nodded.

"She does."

Then he gently rested a hand on my shoulder.

"My niece."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Daniel blinked repeatedly.

"What?"

Rebecca couldn't hide her smile.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

Richard looked at Daniel for the first time.

"You've been introducing yourself as the future owner of Whitmore Technologies."

Daniel swallowed.

"I..."

Richard interrupted him.

"Interesting claim."

"Considering the company has been under a family trust since before you were born."

Lauren stared at me.

"You told me your parents died."

"They did."

"My uncle didn't."

Richard quietly continued.

"Emma's parents were killed in a car accident when she was nineteen."

"I became her legal guardian."

He glanced around the backyard.

"She asked us never to interfere with her personal life."

"I respected that."

His expression hardened.

"Perhaps too much."

Daniel suddenly laughed.

A desperate laugh.

"Fine."

"So she's rich."

"That doesn't change anything."

Rebecca slowly opened another folder.

"It changes everything."

She slid several photographs across the outdoor dining table.

Private photographs.

Daniel meeting with unfamiliar men.

Cash changing hands.

Boxes being loaded into storage units.

Lauren looked down.

"What is this?"

The lead investigator answered.

"Evidence."

Richard folded his hands behind his back.

"Three months ago..."

"Our internal cybersecurity department noticed repeated attempts to access Emma's executive authorization files."

Daniel's breathing quickened.

Richard continued.

"The attacks originated from her home network."

My home.

The same home Daniel insisted needed a faster internet system.

The same month he convinced me to replace all the security equipment.

Rebecca spoke quietly.

"He wasn't just trying to steal your house."

"He wanted your identity."

I looked at her.

She nodded.

"They created duplicate identification."

"Forged executive credentials."

"Replacement passports."

"Digital certificates."

Lauren looked horrified.

"I never knew about that."

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew enough."

"No!"

"I thought we were just taking the company after the wedding."

The investigator looked up.

"After the wedding?"

Lauren realized too late what she'd admitted.

The Financial Crimes investigator opened a tablet.

"Yesterday morning..."

"A shell corporation named EH Global Holdings attempted to borrow forty-eight million dollars."

The guests gasped.

Rebecca continued.

"The application identified Emma Whitmore as CEO."

I frowned.

"I never signed anything."

"You didn't."

She looked at Daniel.

"He did."

Using my forged digital identity.

If the loan had been approved...

The debt would've belonged to me.

Daniel's shoulders slowly sagged.

He looked around.

No one stood beside him anymore.

Not Lauren.

Not the guests.

Not even his own parents, who had quietly arrived during the chaos and now stared at him in disbelief.

His mother whispered,

"Daniel..."

"What have you done?"

He finally looked at me.

"Emma."

"I loved you."

I actually laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

"You loved my house."

"My company."

"My signature."

"My bank accounts."

"You never loved me."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I made mistakes."

Rebecca calmly corrected him.

"No."

"Mistakes happen once."

"This required spreadsheets."

Even several officers smiled.

Richard nodded toward another investigator.

"Show him."

The investigator removed a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a small black hard drive.

"Recognize this?"

Daniel's face lost all color.

The hard drive.

He had once told me it contained old vacation photos.

Instead...

It contained every forged document.

Every fake identity.

Every planned transfer.

And one folder labeled...

Wedding Week.

The investigator plugged it into a forensic laptop.

The screen illuminated.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Among them...

A detailed checklist.

MONDAY: Transfer company shares.

TUESDAY: Move investment funds.

WEDNESDAY: Emma leaves for Seattle.

THURSDAY: Backyard wedding.

FRIDAY: Fly to Cayman Islands.

Every guest read it over the investigator's shoulder.

Lauren slowly turned toward Daniel.

"You made a schedule?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

Then the investigator opened the final document.

The title alone made my stomach tighten.

Post-Marriage Asset Liquidation Plan.

Rebecca quietly asked,

"Would anyone like me to read page three?"

Nobody spoke.

So she did.

"'Once Emma's identity is fully transferred, legal action becomes unnecessary.'"

She turned the page.

"'If complications arise, commit her to psychiatric evaluation using previously documented work stress.'"

The air left my lungs.

Richard clenched his fists.

The officers exchanged grim looks.

Daniel had planned to convince people I was mentally unstable.

Not only to steal everything...

But to make sure no one believed me afterward.

My knees nearly gave out.

Richard steadied me.

"I've got you."

I nodded slowly.

"I know."

Across the yard, Lauren backed away from Daniel as if seeing him for the first time.

"You told me we'd just start a new life."

Daniel whispered,

"I had to write something."

Rebecca looked at him coldly.

"No."

"You intended to do something."

The lead detective stepped forward.

"Daniel Brooks..."

"You are under arrest for identity theft, conspiracy to commit financial fraud, forgery, wire fraud, attempted grand larceny, and criminal impersonation."

He reached for the handcuffs.

Daniel didn't resist.

Instead...

He looked at me one last time.

"Emma..."

"I never meant for it to go this far."

Before I could answer...

A voice came from behind the wedding guests.

"That's not true."

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman slowly walked through the crowd holding a worn leather folder.

I recognized her instantly.

She had cleaned our house every Wednesday for almost three years.

Daniel looked like he'd seen a ghost.

The woman looked directly at him.

"I told you this day would come."

She held up the leather folder.

"I kept copies."

Rebecca's eyes widened.

"What copies?"

The housekeeper smiled sadly.

"Everything he thought he burned."

Daniel's face turned completely white.

Because whatever was inside that folder...

May you like

Was clearly worse than everything investigators had already found.
