Chapter 2

PART 2 — The Wedding Guests Weren't Ready for the Truth
The sirens grew louder.
Closer.
One by one, conversations around the wedding ceremony died.
Daniel forced a laugh.
"Emma..."
"You actually called the police?"
"I did."
"This is a private misunderstanding."
I looked at him.
"No."
"This is a crime scene."
Lauren rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Oh, please."
"You think they're going to arrest someone for falling in love?"
I said nothing.
Because this had never been about love.
Three black SUVs turned into my driveway.
Behind them came two unmarked police vehicles.
The wedding guests immediately stood.
Some instinctively backed away from the ceremony arch.
The first person to step out wasn't a police officer.
It was Rebecca Lawson.
My attorney.
She wore a navy pantsuit and carried two thick document boxes.
Walking beside her was a gray-haired forensic accountant.
Behind them came three investigators from the Financial Crimes Unit.
Finally...
Two uniformed officers.
Daniel's confidence visibly cracked.
"What..."
"...what is all this?"
Rebecca didn't answer him.
She walked directly toward me.
"Are you alright?"
"I am now."
She hugged me briefly before turning toward Daniel.
"Mr. Brooks."
"I advise you not to leave."
Lauren laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
Rebecca calmly opened the first document box.
"I agree."
"Fraud usually is."
One investigator approached the wedding arch.
"Who here is Daniel Brooks?"
Daniel reluctantly raised his hand.
"I am."
The investigator nodded.
"And Lauren Hayes?"
Lauren crossed her arms.
"What if I am?"
"We have a warrant authorizing seizure of electronic devices related to an ongoing financial fraud investigation."
Her smile disappeared.
"What?"
Rebecca quietly placed several folders across the wedding gift table.
"The house deed."
"The company ownership filings."
"The banking authorizations."
"The electronic signature records."
She looked at me.
"They've all been altered."
The guests collectively gasped.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"Emma signed everything."
"I have copies."
Rebecca smiled.
"So do we."
She opened another folder.
"Would you like to explain why every electronic signature occurred..."
"...while Emma was presenting live on stage at a conference in San Francisco?"
Daniel froze.
Rebecca continued.
"The IP address placing those signatures..."
"...came from Emma's home office."
I folded my arms.
"The same office where only two other people knew my security code."
Everyone slowly turned.
Toward Daniel.
Then toward Lauren.
Lauren immediately pointed at him.
"I didn't touch the computer."
Daniel looked horrified.
"Lauren..."
She took another step backward.
"You said she'd never find out."
The entire backyard fell silent.
The forensic accountant connected a tablet to a portable monitor.
"We recovered deleted security footage."
My heartbeat remained steady.
I already knew what they would find.
Six months earlier...
After returning from a business trip...
I had noticed my office security system briefly going offline.
Daniel blamed a software update.
I believed him.
Now the restored footage played.
Daniel entered my office.
Lauren followed.
He opened my desk drawer.
Removed my passport.
Tax records.
Corporate seals.
She photographed every document.
Then...
Daniel inserted a USB device into my computer.
The timestamp showed exactly when dozens of ownership files had been modified.
Nobody spoke.
An older wedding guest whispered,
"My God..."
Another quietly stood and walked away.
Then another.
The officiant slowly closed his ceremony book.
"I think..."
"...I'm leaving."
No one stopped him.
Daniel looked desperately toward me.
"Emma."
"I can explain."
Rebecca answered first.
"Please do."
"I'm particularly interested in the forged board resolutions."
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
"The ones transferring controlling shares of Whitmore Technologies."
His face emptied.
Rebecca looked through another folder.
"Unfortunately for you..."
"...Emma only owns forty-nine percent directly."
Lauren frowned.
"I thought she owned everything."
I smiled.
"So did you."
Rebecca continued.
"The remaining fifty-one percent belongs to the Whitmore Family Trust."
Daniel whispered,
"What trust?"
"The trust," Rebecca replied calmly, "that automatically froze every attempted ownership transfer..."
"...the moment fraudulent documents were uploaded."
Daniel's breathing became uneven.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Rebecca looked directly into his eyes.
"It was inevitable."
One investigator approached carrying another evidence bag.
"We also recovered these."
Inside were three passports.
Mine.
Daniel's.
Lauren's.
Along with two one-way airline tickets to the Cayman Islands.
Departure.
Tomorrow morning.
The guests erupted into whispers.
Lauren grabbed Daniel's arm.
"You told me nobody knew about those!"
Daniel pulled away.
"Stop talking."
"No!"
She turned toward investigators.
"This was his idea!"
"He said once we sold her company we'd disappear."
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
"You promised—"
"You promised me we'd be rich!"
The words echoed across my backyard.
My backyard.
The one they'd nearly stolen.
Rebecca quietly handed me one final folder.
Inside were my real property records.
Every document untouched.
Every asset protected.
Every forged transfer automatically rejected months ago.
I looked at Daniel.
"You know what the saddest part is?"
He didn't answer.
"You spent almost a year trying to steal things..."
"...you never legally controlled."
His shoulders slumped.
Rebecca closed the final folder.
"The house is still Emma's."
"The company is still Emma's."
"The accounts never left Emma's control."
Daniel looked completely lost.
"But..."
"...I saw the confirmations."
Rebecca nodded.
"Fake confirmation pages."
"Generated by malware."
Lauren slowly turned toward him.
"You lied to me too?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
Because for the first time...
He realized something.
He hadn't only destroyed my life.
He had destroyed hers with the exact same lies.
And just as the first officer stepped toward him with a pair of handcuffs...
A black luxury SUV rolled slowly through the front gate.
Rebecca looked at it.
Then smiled.
"They're here."
I frowned.
"Who?"
She looked at me.
"The people Daniel has been pretending to be for the last four years."
The rear passenger door opened.
And the chairman of Whitmore Technologies stepped out.
He wasn't alone.
May you like
Neither of us expected who was walking beside him.
