Chapter 1

PART 1 — I Came Home Two Days Early… and Walked Into My Own Betrayal
The first thing I noticed wasn't the music.
It was the lights.
Hundreds of warm white string lights shimmered across my backyard, wrapped around the oak trees I had planted with my late father five years earlier. White roses lined the stone walkway. Crystal lanterns floated in the swimming pool.
Someone had transformed my home into a wedding venue.
For one impossible second, I wondered if I had driven to the wrong address.
Then I saw my mailbox.
EMMA WHITMORE.
My name.
My house.
My backyard.
My stomach dropped.
I had flown home from Seattle two days early after a technology conference ended ahead of schedule. I hadn't told anyone because I wanted to surprise my boyfriend, Daniel.
We'd been together for four years.
He always complained that I traveled too much for my software company.
I thought coming home early would make him happy.
Instead...
I found him standing beneath the white floral arch I had personally paid for six months earlier.
The arch he'd insisted we buy because, someday, "we'll get married right here."
He wasn't waiting for me.
He was holding someone else's hands.
My best friend.
Lauren.
She stood in a designer wedding gown smiling up at him while an officiant held an open ceremony book.
Nearly eighty guests sat in white chairs facing them.
Champagne flowed.
A violin quartet played softly.
No one noticed me.
Not yet.
I stood frozen at the back gate, my suitcase still in one hand.
Then the officiant spoke.
"Do you, Daniel Brooks, take Lauren Hayes to be your lawful wife?"
Daniel opened his mouth.
Before he could answer...
Someone turned around.
A bridesmaid gasped.
Every head slowly followed hers.
The music stopped.
The silence spread across the backyard like a wave.
Daniel looked at me.
His face turned completely white.
Lauren didn't panic.
She sighed.
Actually sighed.
Then smiled.
"Oh..."
She glanced at her watch.
"You weren't supposed to be home until Saturday."
For several seconds...
Nobody moved.
I looked around my own backyard.
My patio furniture.
My family's garden.
My father's oak trees.
Even the custom wine bar engraved with my initials.
Everything had been used to celebrate a wedding I was never meant to see.
Finally I asked the only question that mattered.
"What exactly..."
"...is happening in my house?"
Daniel stepped forward quickly.
"Emma, I can explain."
Lauren gently touched his arm.
"No."
She looked directly at me.
"We're in love."
The words didn't hurt as much as I expected.
What hurt...
Was how rehearsed they sounded.
Like they'd practiced saying them together.
I noticed something else.
Lauren was wearing my grandmother's diamond earrings.
The ones I'd left inside my bedroom safe.
I slowly looked from the earrings...
To Daniel.
To the guests.
Then back to Lauren.
"You've been inside my bedroom."
She smiled without shame.
"We've practically lived here for months."
The guests exchanged nervous glances.
One older woman whispered,
"I thought she owned the house together with Daniel."
Daniel immediately answered.
"I do."
I turned toward him.
"No."
"You don't."
He laughed nervously.
"Emma..."
"We've already transferred everything."
Transferred?
A strange calm settled over me.
"What did you say?"
Lauren folded her arms.
"The house."
"The company."
"The investment accounts."
"It's all signed."
She actually pitied me.
"You work too much."
"You sign whatever Daniel puts in front of you."
Something clicked inside my mind.
Three months earlier...
Daniel had asked me to sign what he called "insurance updates."
Two months earlier...
Corporate banking forms.
Electronic authorizations.
Property documents.
I had signed them between investor meetings without reading every page.
Daniel saw recognition appear in my eyes.
He smiled.
"It's done."
"You can't stop it now."
I looked around one final time.
Then quietly set my suitcase on the ground.
"No?"
I reached into my coat pocket.
Pulled out my phone.
And dialed a number I had memorized years earlier.
Daniel frowned.
"Who are you calling?"
"My attorney."
Lauren laughed.
"For what?"
I calmly pressed Speaker.
The phone rang only once.
"Rebecca Lawson."
"It's Emma."
There was no greeting.
No small talk.
Only one sentence.
"I'm standing in my backyard watching my boyfriend marry my best friend."
A pause.
Then Rebecca's voice became dangerously calm.
"Did you arrive before they finished?"
"Yes."
"Perfect."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Rebecca answered him instead.
"It means they committed fraud before completing the final step."
Daniel's confidence flickered.
Rebecca continued.
"Emma..."
"Don't let anyone leave."
"I'm already on my way."
"I won't be alone."
I ended the call.
Lauren crossed her arms.
"So what?"
"My lawyer can't stop a wedding."
I smiled for the first time all evening.
"No."
"But the investigators riding with her probably can."
The smile disappeared from Lauren's face.
Daniel suddenly looked uncertain.
"What investigators?"
I looked directly into his eyes.
"The ones who've been waiting for someone to use the forged documents."
May you like
And somewhere beyond the front gate...
The sound of approaching police sirens began echoing through the quiet neighborhood.
