Chapter 23 - BRENDA COMES OUT

Brenda was released from prison when Elise was thirteen.

Her supervision prohibited contact with me, Preston, Gary, and Elise without explicit approval.

She moved to another county.

Worked in a garden center.

Continued therapy.

No Reed employment.

No trust role.

Her old beneficial economic interest remained only where law and forfeiture allowed it.

The family did not strip every dollar from her as moral punishment.

Financial rights and family access were different.

Brenda asked for contact after two years.

I said no.

At sixteen, Elise asked:

“Why don’t you see her?”

“Because I don’t want to.”

“Are you scared?”

“Some.”

“Angry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you forgive her?”

“I don’t organize the decision around forgiveness.”

She rolled her eyes.

“I know. Adults.”

At seventeen, Brenda sent a new letter.

This one contained no request.

Audrey,

I used to imagine the baby as a symbol. Then prison made me confront that the baby became a child living somewhere while I stayed angry at an abstraction.

I know her name is Elise because it appeared in public court records. I have never searched for her photos.

I am not asking to meet her.

I am telling you that I understand my restraint now is part of what I owe.

I read it twice.

Then showed Preston.

“What do you think?”

“That it’s better than before.”

“Does better matter?”

“Yes.”

“Does it change access?”

“Not automatically.”

We had learned that sentence well.

At nineteen, Elise chose to write Brenda.

One paragraph.

I know what you did. I know you helped prosecutors later. I don’t want a relationship now. Please keep respecting that.

Brenda replied through counsel:

I will.

And did.

No secret birthday card.

No intermediary.

No dramatic appearance.

Boundaries became evidence of change more reliable than apologies.

I never met Brenda again while Robert was alive.

That was not a vow.

It simply remained true year after year.

Some relationships heal.

May you like

Some become safe distance.

Both can be endings.
