Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT SHE STOPPED MOVING

Brenda was already coming toward me when I understood the expression on her face was not ordinary anger.
I had seen my younger sister furious before.
This was different.
Her eyes were fixed below my face.
On my stomach.
I was six months pregnant, awkwardly balancing a plate from the lunch buffet while standing beside the long stone table in our father’s backyard.
Brenda lunged.
Her shoulder drove into my upper body.
Then her arm struck the curve of my abdomen.
The plate flew from my hand.
Porcelain shattered against the patio.
I dropped to my knees.
“This is what happens when you forget who your family is!”
For half a second, pain was all I understood.
Then instinct took over.
Both hands covered my belly.
“Elise?”
That was what Preston and I had begun calling our unborn daughter in private.
Not her legal name yet.
Just ours.
Usually she reacted whenever I bent forward.
A roll.
A kick.
Some irritated little protest against being compressed.
Nothing.
My breath stopped.
I pressed gently against the right side.
Nothing.
“Move,” I whispered.
Preston was suddenly beside me.
“Audrey?”
“She stopped moving.”
My own voice sounded like it belonged to another woman.
Preston’s face drained.
Behind him, Robert grabbed Brenda by both arms and pulled her several steps away.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” my father shouted.
Brenda did not look ashamed.
She stared down at me as though she had completed something.
Preston helped support my shoulders.
“Call 911.”
Gary stood near the back door with his phone in one hand.
He had gone white.
No one moved quickly enough.
Preston looked over his shoulder.
“Gary! Call!”
That was when Brenda laughed.
A low, ugly sound.
“You always did need everybody to rescue you.”
Preston rose.
I knew his face.
I had seen him angry in court stories, frustrated after long days, furious once when a drunk driver nearly hit us.
I had never seen this.
He crossed the distance between them.
His palm struck Brenda’s face.
She fell.
“Preston!”
He followed her.
Before Robert could reach him, Preston kicked Brenda once in the abdomen.
The force rolled her across the grass.
I screamed.
“If anything happens to the baby, you’re finished!”
I did not know which one of them I meant.
Maybe both.
Preston stopped instantly.
The rage disappeared from his face and horror replaced it.
Brenda curled onto one side, coughing.
Robert shoved Preston backward.
“What have you done?”
Preston looked at his own shoe.
Then at me.
“I—”
“Stay away from her.”
My voice shook.
I did not want him touching Brenda again.
I also did not want him leaving me.
Those truths existed together.
Brenda pushed herself onto one elbow.
Her cheek reddened beneath Preston’s handprint.
She pointed directly at me.
“You think your judge husband can protect you from everything?”
The sentence changed the air.
Not because Preston was a judge.
Everyone there already knew that.
Because Brenda sounded as though whatever came next had been prepared for his position specifically.
Gary stepped between everyone.
His phone shook visibly.
“Audrey…”
“What?”
He swallowed.
“Brenda wasn’t planning this alone.”
Brenda’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
“Gary, shut up.”
He turned the phone toward me.
A paused video filled the screen.
Brenda stood beside the same patio table earlier that morning.
Someone was speaking from outside the frame.
Gary’s thumb covered the audio control.
“Who is that?” I asked.
He stared toward our father.
Robert stood perfectly still.
Sirens began somewhere beyond the gate.
Gary whispered:
May you like
“I think this whole lunch was arranged to make something happen to you.”
And before he could press play, Robert reached for the phone.
