Chapter 17 - PAUL MERCER COMES HOME IN HANDCUFFS

Mercer was arrested in Costa Rica after trying to transfer money through a Canadian account.
Extradition took months.
By the time he returned, I was thirty-five weeks pregnant.
He looked smaller than I remembered.
Without tailored suits and polished conference rooms, he appeared like an ordinary sixty-year-old man who had spent too long believing documents could distance him from consequences.
Mercer negotiated a plea.
Trust fraud.
Obstruction.
Conspiracy.
Money laundering.
Professional misconduct would separately end his legal license.
He admitted designing the incapacity strategy.
“Why?” the federal prosecutor asked.
“Robert believed the trust was economically irrational.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Is economic disagreement permission to evade a trust?”
“No.”
“When did planning involve Audrey’s pregnancy?”
“When the waiver failed.”
“Who proposed a medical incident?”
Mercer paused.
“Robert asked what would happen if Audrey were incapacitated before delivery.”
“What did you answer?”
“That he could seek temporary authority.”
“Who suggested creating the incapacity?”
“I prepared legal options. Brenda and Robert discussed family pressure.”
The prosecutor showed his invoice.
BENEFICIARY INCIDENT PREPARATION.
Mercer looked down.
Lawyers often hid verbs in nouns.
The records supplied the verbs.
He wrote draft petitions before the lunch.
He paid the crisis consultant.
He arranged camera access through Reed Strategic Continuity.
He advised Brenda how to describe my “emotional escalation.”
He could not claim mere abstract lawyering.
Mercer also recovered Mom’s missing brown box.
Robert gave it to him the morning after she died.
Inside were original trust valuations and a handwritten ledger documenting Robert’s early related-party deals.
Mercer stored it in a private vault.
Why not destroy it?
Insurance.
Against Robert.
People inside conspiracies often preserved evidence because trust among conspirators remained poor.
The ledger added several million to restitution claims.
Mom had documented enough to confront Robert.
Then died before doing it.
Again, a safeguard postponed because love made immediate conflict unbearable.
I no longer romanticized that.
Mom had protected me in one way and left me exposed in another.
Both were true.
Mercer’s cooperation helped recover funds and clarify roles.
His sentence was lower than Robert’s eventual sentence but substantial.
His law license was revoked.
Reed Strategic Continuity dissolved.
The trust received insurance recovery from his firm.
No amount returned the moment I knelt on the patio searching for movement.
Money repaired money.
Not bodies.
At home that night, Preston assembled the crib.
He attached one side backward.
I watched for ten minutes.
“Are you going to tell me?”
“I wanted to see how long judicial confidence lasts against furniture.”
He stared at the instructions.
“I hate your mother’s descendants.”
I laughed so hard Elise kicked.
The sound of my own laughter surprised me.

Our home had been full of trials.
A badly assembled crib was allowed to remain merely ridiculous.
