PART 5

The Funeral That Wasn't About Death

Two months later, Harrison suffered a massive heart attack.

He survived.

Barely.

The billionaire who had once controlled boardrooms now struggled simply to stand.

One afternoon he asked Maria to visit him alone.

She entered quietly.

He looked toward the window.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Maria said nothing.

"I've spent years wondering what I'd say if I ever saw you again."

Still nothing.

Finally he whispered,

"I stole your child."

Maria closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"I stole his mother."

"Yes."

"I stole my son's chance to know the best person I ever met."

Silence filled the room.

After a long time...

Maria walked over and adjusted the blanket covering his legs.

Not because he deserved kindness.

Because kindness had always been who she was.

Harrison looked up with tears in his eyes.

"Why?"

She answered softly.

"Because if I become you..."

May you like

"...then you win twice."

He cried harder than she had ever seen.
