PART 4

The Truth the Lawyers Found

A week later, Harrison Holloway requested a private meeting.

Grant almost refused.

Maria gently touched his arm.

"You should hear him."

The meeting took place inside Harrison's study.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

Only three people.

Harrison looked ten years older.

He slowly opened an old cedar box sitting on his desk.

"I've carried this for thirty-eight years."

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

Every one addressed to Maria.

Grant frowned.

"What are these?"

Harrison lowered his head.

"Letters she wrote you."

Maria froze.

"I wrote hundreds."

"I know."

Grant looked between them.

"You never received them?"

Harrison slowly shook his head.

"I intercepted every one."

Maria's hands began trembling.

"I begged the hospital for your school."

"I hired investigators."

"I sent birthday cards."

She looked at Grant.

"They all came back."

Grant turned toward his father.

"You lied every single year."

Harrison closed his eyes.

"I convinced myself I was protecting our family."

"No."

Grant's voice remained calm.

"You were protecting your reputation."

For the first time...

Harrison didn't defend himself.

Because there was nothing left to defend.
