Chapter 22 - GREGORY’S SENTENCE

Gregory’s sentencing came after financial cases had already transformed the family.

His lawyers presented:

No prior convictions.

Alcohol use at wedding.

Family pressure.

Remorse.

Therapy.

My training and lack of serious injury.

The prosecution presented:

Planning.

Weapon request.

Locked door.

Threats.

Texts.

Violence after vows.

I spoke.

“I do not believe Gregory intended to kill me.”

He looked up.

“I believe he intended to frighten me into obedience.”

Then:

“He chose a baseball bat because fear was the point.”

I explained I disarmed him because I could.

Another woman might not.

The judge imposed a substantial custodial sentence followed by supervision.

No contact with me.

Weapons restrictions.

Domestic-violence programming.

His sentence was not decades.

Serious.

Proportionate to conduct and conviction.
