Chapter 23 - GRANT WITHOUT THE ASHFORD TITLE

Grant never returned to Ashford Capital management.

Later became a consultant.
Completed supervision.
No further violence record.
Paid restitution.
Maintained relationships with Rose and Noah at the pace courts and children allowed.
At fifty-five, he asked Rose:
“Do you think I’ve changed?”
She answered:
“Yes.”
He looked relieved.
Then she added:
“That doesn’t change what you did.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Good.
Grant apologized to me once in person, decades after the assault.
Neutral restaurant.
Public.
No reconciliation fantasy.
“I used you.”
“Yes.”
“I let Mom turn your pregnancy into governance.”
“Yes.”
“I hit you.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
“Do you forgive me?”
“I don’t organize my life around that question anymore.”
He nodded.
Fair.
We left separately.
No lingering kiss.
No suggestion we belonged together.
We had a daughter.

That was enough.
