Chapter 22 - EVELYN MEETS ROSE

Rose was twenty-two when she changed her mind.
One meeting.
Mediated.
Evelyn was eighty-four.
Thin.
Slower.
No jewelry except her wedding ring.
I did not attend.
Grant did not.
Rose told me afterward.
First question:
“Did you clap?”
Evelyn cried immediately.
Rose waited.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Grant had done what I wanted emotionally. He had shown you and your mother that he was choosing the family structure I believed in.”
“You clapped when he punched her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he would?”
“No.”
“Did you care after?”
“Not enough.”
Rose nodded.
Then:
“Did you want Noah more than me?”
Evelyn answered carefully.
“At first, I wanted what I believed Noah represented more than I wanted to know you.”
Rose looked at her.
“That’s not the same question.”
“No.”
“Did you want him more?”
“Yes.”
Truth.
Ugly.
Useful.
Rose asked:
“Now?”
“No.”
“Because you love me?”
“Because I learned that the hierarchy I believed in destroyed everything I thought it protected.”
Rose ended the meeting after twenty-five minutes.
No hug.
No forgiveness.
But when Evelyn died two years later, Rose attended the funeral.
Noah too.
May you like
They sat together.
That mattered more than who had once been called heir.
