Chapter 19 - MY FATHER LEARNS TO ASK

Alexander Vale had always been protective.
Too protective.
After Grant’s assault, he became almost unbearable.
Security everywhere.
Drivers.
Background checks.
He wanted Rose at private school because it had better gates.
I refused.
He argued.
I said:
“You do not get to become Evelyn in a nicer suit.”
That silenced him.
He apologized.
Then changed.
Before buying Rose a pony:
“Can I?”
No.
Before setting up a travel trust:
“Can I?”
Yes, after independent review.
Before inviting us to spend summer at Vale House:
“Would you like to?”
Sometimes.
Not always.
Power became askable.
That changed our relationship.
At seventy-two, Alexander retired as CEO of Vale Holdings.
Professional successor.
No automatic Claire.
No Rose.
I asked why.
“Because I finally believe a company that cannot survive my retirement was never healthy.”
Therapy by proximity.
He smiled.
Rose loved him.
He taught her chess.
She beat him at fourteen.
He accused her of collusion.
She told him:
“Take the loss like a man.”
I nearly fell out of my chair.
The “male heir” mythology had become a joke in another generation.

Not because we forgot.
Because it no longer ruled us.
