Chapter 4 - THE BODY THAT HAD BEEN MOVED

Police confirmed the final sentence existed on Caleb’s copy.

The voice did not belong to Caleb.

It did not belong to Robert or Frank according to preliminary comparison.

The file contained several edits.

Beatrice’s words had been lifted from a longer source and rearranged. Background noise shifted between phrases. The man’s whisper came from a separate recording.

Someone had manufactured a confession without inventing every word.

That made it more dangerous.

The autopsy file from nine years earlier became central again.

Beatrice’s body had been found below the northern embankment, nearly four hundred yards from the crashed car.

Investigators concluded she wandered there.

No witness saw her move.

No clear track survived because freezing rain began before dawn.

Frank’s claim that the body had been moved was not proof.

It was enough for Detective Alvarez to reopen the case review.

Caleb remained at Robert and Grace’s house.

Grace moved into a hotel rather than remain beneath the same roof.

Robert accused her of abandoning their son during a mental crisis.

Grace answered, “He planned terror as a wedding gift.”

The marriage records showed Caleb and I had signed a valid license. Annulment was not automatic simply because the relationship collapsed immediately.

Mara filed based on fraud and coercion.

Caleb’s attorney argued he genuinely intended marriage and confronted me only after receiving new evidence days before the ceremony.

Digital records contradicted him.

The audio file had been created three months earlier.

Caleb rented the bridal suite six months earlier and requested a lock that could not be opened from the hallway without a master key.

Hotel management called it a privacy upgrade.

He knew exactly what room he was building.

The wedding itself had become part of his plan.

I reviewed our relationship with new suspicion.

The proposal at Beatrice’s favorite garden.

The insistence that we marry at the Miller Lake Hotel.

The private jokes that now sounded like tests.

Had he ever loved me?

Or had love become a method of access?

Grace brought me a box from Caleb’s childhood room.

Inside were photographs of Beatrice and me as teenagers.

Several had been cut so my face was removed.

A notebook contained dates marking every anniversary of Beatrice’s death.

The final page listed our wedding schedule.

4:00 ceremony.

7:30 first dance.

10:15 suite.

10:20 lock.

10:25 playback.

10:40 confession.

No line described what would happen if I did not confess.

At the bottom, Caleb had written:

Frank will reveal himself when he hears her voice.

He had not built the trap only for me.

May you like

He expected Frank to react.

And he had arranged for his uncle to be the first person outside the suite when the door opened.
