Chapter 10 - THE LEDGER BEATRICE STOLE
The financial records on Beatrice’s memory card showed a decade-long scheme.
Robert and my father had diverted money from the Miller Lake Hotel renovation fund into private real-estate projects. Frank signed several vendor approvals. Nathan Vale created shell safety companies that issued false inspection reports.
Beatrice discovered the transfers while helping Grace organize charity accounts.
She copied the ledger.
Then she confronted Robert.
The crash occurred two nights later.
Financial fraud gave the men motive to silence her.
It did not prove who caused her death.
The video also showed something unexpected.
My father wanted to confess.
He told Robert the scheme had grown beyond control and said he would meet federal investigators after the winter party.
Robert responded:
“You will ruin Katherine with the rest of us.”
My father asked what that meant.
Robert looked directly toward the office door where Beatrice was secretly recording.
“He knew she was there,” Detective Alvarez said.
The dark vehicle that followed us from the hotel belonged to Miller Hospitality.
Its driver assignment was missing from records.
Nathan Vale managed fleet dispatch that year.
Frank supervised the marina.
Robert owned the vehicle.
Four men could have controlled it.
The memory card contained a text export from Beatrice’s phone.
She had messaged Caleb hours before the crash:
I know why Dad keeps Frank loyal. I’ll explain after I get Katherine somewhere safe.
Caleb never received it.
Phone-company records showed the message was blocked through a family security service Robert controlled.
Caleb had spent nine years believing Beatrice trusted me with secrets she withheld from him.
In reality, she had tried to tell him.
Grace brought the evidence to Caleb under attorney supervision.
He listened to Beatrice’s words once.
Then he asked, “Did Katherine know she messaged me?”
“No,” Alvarez said.
His face changed.
The revenge he built required believing Beatrice chose me over him and I abandoned her.
Both assumptions were collapsing.
He did not apologize.
He asked for the full audio file.
Police refused because the case remained active.
That night Caleb violated no order, made no contact, and posted nothing.
Instead, he entered Robert’s house using an old key.
Security footage showed him leaving with a locked metal case.
Robert reported the theft.
Police stopped Caleb at the lake road.
Inside the case were hotel ledgers, Nathan’s original contracts, and a loaded pistol.
Caleb claimed he took the weapon to prevent Robert from using it.
The magazine was full.
One round was missing.
Ballistic records showed the same model had been fired near the crash site nine years earlier.
No bullet had ever been recovered from Beatrice’s body.
Because she had not died from a gunshot.
The missing round meant something else had happened at the road.
