Chapter 13 - THE SENTENCE CALEB REMOVED
Paul Mercer, Caleb’s investigator, surrendered every source file used to create the wedding recording.
The full Beatrice audio came from her phone.
Caleb had received it anonymously six months before the wedding.
Only portions were recoverable then.
Kat left me.
She promised she would come back.
Frank said she won’t.
The later forensic recovery revealed the next words:
But I know Kat. She will bring someone.
Caleb had asked Mercer to remove that sentence because he believed it reflected Beatrice’s confusion.
Mercer warned that editing changed meaning.
Caleb answered in writing:
Meaning is what Katherine did, not what Beatrice hoped.
The message became evidence in the coercion case surrounding the bridal suite.
Caleb’s revenge had not begun with a mistaken recording.
He saw uncertainty and chose the interpretation that allowed punishment.
He issued a public statement through his attorney.
“I manipulated my sister’s words and caused Katherine terror. My grief does not excuse it.”
The statement did not ask me to forgive him.
It also did not admit marrying me solely for revenge.
The annulment case continued.
His private journals showed he loved me and hated me at the same time. He believed marrying me would either prove my innocence through intimacy or place me close enough to confess.
That was not a foundation for consent.
Robert remained missing.
Police tracked him through a toll camera heading toward the old private clinic across the lake.
The building had been abandoned for fifteen years.
Grace insisted on accompanying police to the staging area.
I remained with Mara.
Caleb violated his release condition by following officers in a separate car.
He was stopped before reaching the clinic and detained for the breach.
Inside the abandoned building, police found Robert’s vehicle, the original financial ledgers, and several containers of fuel.
Robert had arranged documents throughout the main treatment room.
A timer sat beside the fuel.
He intended to destroy the building and evidence together.
Negotiators contacted him by phone.
Robert said he would surrender only if Grace came inside.
Police refused.
Grace took the negotiator’s phone.
“You let our daughter die to protect a hotel,” she said.
“I protected all of you.”
“You protected your chair.”
“You enjoyed the life it bought.”
Grace did not deny it.
“I did. And I will answer for what I ignored. You will answer for what you chose.”
Robert ended the call.
Minutes later smoke rose from the clinic roof.
Officers entered.
They found Robert unconscious near the rear exit from smoke inhalation.
The fire damaged part of the ledger collection but not all.
A metal cabinet survived.
Inside were payment records, the missing pistol magazine, and a sealed envelope addressed to Caleb.
