Chapter 4 - THE FIRST SIGNATURE

I had chosen to restrict my Blackwood accounts after marrying Julian.
That decision was mine.
Henry had opposed the marriage and tried to persuade me with lawyers, investigators, and financial forecasts. I interpreted every warning as another attempt to control me.
To prove that I wanted Julian rather than the Blackwood name, I placed my voting shares into a dormant trust and suspended direct access to most family assets.
The red thread marked the emergency protocol.
Breaking it did not hand me unlimited power.
It restored my right to receive information, appoint independent counsel, and review actions taken while I was absent.
The first report Naomi showed me contained a request submitted eight months earlier.
It asked the dormant trust to approve a loan against future distributions.
The request carried my digital signature.
“I never submitted this.”
“Do you recognize the certificate?”
“Yes. It was used for my original restriction agreement.”
The request had been rejected because the trust required live confirmation from me.
Three more requests followed.
Each came through different entities connected to the Vance family.
None succeeded.
“What were they trying to borrow against?” I asked.
Naomi turned the page.
The attached valuation referred to a minority interest worth more than eighty million dollars.
I had known the trust held shares.
I had never known their current value.
Julian had.
A copy of the valuation had been downloaded through his law firm’s client portal.
His attorney claimed it was obtained during ordinary marital planning.
No marital planning file contained my consent.
The day after Maya’s injury, Julian issued a public statement.
He described me as emotionally overwhelmed, estranged from both families, and manipulated by Henry’s sudden arrival.
He said Genevieve regretted an “unintentional contact” with Maya.
He did not mention that the camera had been disabled.
He did not mention Claire.
Online photographs showed me standing in the ballroom with a secure phone and Henry’s security nearby.
The caption beneath one business article called it a staged Blackwood takeover.
Naomi advised silence beyond one factual statement.
I followed her advice.
That did not stop the calls.
Clients of my small design studio canceled meetings.
Mothers from Maya’s school sent messages asking whether she was safe.
Julian’s supporters claimed I had kidnapped our daughter from the marital home.
He filed an emergency family-court petition requesting immediate access.
The petition described him as a devoted father excluded after a conflict between adult women.
It included a letter from a psychologist named Dr. Elise Rowan.
Dr. Rowan wrote that I had shown paranoia, unstable attachment, and an unhealthy fixation on protecting Maya from imagined threats.
I had attended three sessions with her.
Julian selected her.
He sat inside every appointment.
Her letter claimed she had evaluated me independently.
She had not.

Attached behind it was a consent form authorizing release of my treatment records to Julian and Genevieve.
The signature at the bottom looked exactly like mine.
