Chapter 12 - THE CLAUSE IN OUR MARRIAGE
Julian had recorded private conversations throughout our marriage.
Some captured arguments.
Others captured me crying after fights with Henry.
One recorded me saying I felt trapped between two families and wanted to take Maya somewhere no one knew us.
Julian’s attorneys used the recordings to support his custody claims.
Naomi challenged how they were obtained and whether they were complete.
The state’s recording laws required detailed analysis of location, consent, and device use.
Not every file would be admissible.
Public opinion required no such caution.
Edited clips spread quickly.
I wanted to answer every accusation.
Naomi stopped me.
“Your job is not to win each hour.”
The family evaluator reviewed full recordings rather than excerpts.
Context mattered.
In one clip, I said I wanted to disappear after Julian told me Henry had filed to take Maya.
No such filing existed.
Julian had manufactured the fear, then recorded my reaction to it.
The marriage documents revealed another problem.
A postnuptial amendment stated that if I caused a reputational scandal through violence, instability, or public misconduct, Julian could seek temporary voting authority over assets used to support the family.
My signature appeared on the final page.
I remembered signing a property-tax document on the same date.
The signature page was genuine.
The pages above it were not the document I had reviewed.
A printer analysis tied the amendment to Genevieve’s laptop.
A notary named Daniel Price admitted Julian presented the signed page afterward and said I had forgotten to initial the remaining sections.
Daniel notarized without seeing me.
He lost his commission and entered into a cooperation agreement.
The amendment was likely void.
Still, its existence clarified the plan.
A filmed assault would support the postnuptial claim, the custody petition, and the trust application simultaneously.
Julian had built several doors that opened with the same image.
Me striking Genevieve.
I had not done it.
Genevieve’s slap had created criminal exposure instead.
The strategy collapsed because Maya ran toward Henry and named her attacker before the room could be controlled.
At the civil evidentiary hearing, Julian testified that the amendment reflected legitimate marital planning.
Naomi asked why the printer file was created by Genevieve.
“She assisted with family paperwork.”
“Why was the signature page taken from another document?”
“I disagree with that conclusion.”
“Why did you hire a photographer to capture aggressive conduct?”
“Reputation management.”
“Why schedule a family correction involving a five-year-old?”
His composure faltered.
“The phrase was Genevieve’s.”
The metadata showed Julian created the schedule.
He changed his answer.
“I approved her draft without reading every line.”
For years, he had used my incomplete reading as proof of consent.
Now he tried to use his own as proof of innocence.
The judge took the matter under advisement.
Outside the courthouse, Genevieve’s attorney requested an urgent meeting.
Genevieve had received a message from Julian.
Tell them Eleanor planned the entire scene, or the account paying your defense disappears.
