Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WANTED TO SAVE ME
Henry offered to buy Julian’s company debt.
The proposal would allow lenders and vendors to be paid while placing the Vance business under Blackwood control.
Naomi brought the offer to me before it was delivered.
“No,” I said.
“It could remove Julian’s financial motive to fight.”
“It could also let my father purchase the ending he wants.”
Henry came to the apartment.
“I can prevent employee layoffs.”
“Then invest through an independent restructuring if the court permits. No personal leverage.”
“Eleanor—”
“You do not get Julian’s company, his house, or his fear in exchange for helping me.”
He looked at Maya’s drawings on the refrigerator.
“I want to repair what I failed to protect.”
“You cannot repair it by owning more.”
The offer was withdrawn.
Henry later joined a neutral lender group under terms that gave him no management control and no claim over my custody case.
That compromise saved some Vance employees without giving him Julian’s life.
The distinction mattered.
My father’s surveillance reports remained a problem.
Julian’s attorneys sought them in discovery and argued that Henry had manipulated the entire investigation.
Some reports contained photographs of Maya entering school.
I had never consented.
Henry’s risk firm had acted within broad public-observation rules, but legality did not make it acceptable.
I demanded the contract end.
Henry terminated it and turned all records over to independent counsel.
He also agreed to delete copies after preservation requirements expired.
His behavior did not equal Julian’s.
It still violated my boundaries.
The family evaluator noted that I challenged both men rather than replacing loyalty to one with loyalty to the other.
That became important.
Genevieve’s cooperation deepened after she learned Julian had prepared a statement blaming her alone.
She admitted the slap was not entirely impulsive.
“I was supposed to grab the plate and shout,” she said. “Eleanor would come running. Julian said she might push me.”
“Why slap Maya?”
“She called me mean.”
The childishness of the motive made the act worse.
Genevieve had agreed to frighten a five-year-old for money and status, then escalated because the child named what she was doing.
She also revealed that Julian had given her fifty thousand dollars the morning of the gala.
The transfer was labeled wardrobe reimbursement.
The gown cost twelve thousand.
The remaining money was payment for participating.
Bank records confirmed it.
Julian’s attorney claimed it covered debts unrelated to the event.
Then Detective Benson recovered a deleted voice message.
Julian said:
You get the rest when Eleanor gives us the reaction.
The payment connected financial pressure to the staged confrontation.
Prosecutors prepared charges.
Before they filed, Julian made his own offer.
He would surrender custody claims, provide account passwords, and admit the forged travel reservation if I signed a confidential settlement transferring my voting authority for three years.
Even now, he believed control could be negotiated through Maya.
I rejected it.
That evening, he released a private recording of me from our bedroom.
In it, I said I sometimes wished Henry would disappear forever.
