Chapter 6 - THE SIGNAL IN THE TIARA

The beacon transmitted location through a Vance security account.

Julian claimed it was a child-safety measure.

He had never told me.

The device recorded no audio, but its history showed where Maya had gone for ninety-three days.

School.

Pediatric appointments.

Playgrounds.

My private meetings with Claire.

Two visits to Arthur.

Julian had known I was still connected to my father.

He had pretended surprise at the gala.

That realization changed the meaning of everything.

If Julian knew my relationship with Arthur remained intact, he also knew the Blackwood restrictions were voluntary.

He did not believe I was powerless.

He believed my power could be captured through Maya.

The account logs showed Victoria accessed the beacon most often.

Genevieve accessed it twice.

She said Julian asked her to confirm whether I met a lawyer.

The tracking evidence supported stalking and privacy-related claims, but prosecutors separated that conduct from the assault case.

Every wrongdoing did not belong inside one criminal count.

The independent corporate audit uncovered the next layer.

Vance International had borrowed one hundred and twenty million dollars to acquire a medical-logistics company.

The acquisition failed.

Julian hid losses by moving debt into special-purpose entities and used the forged Blackwood guarantee to prevent lenders from demanding more collateral.

The company still owned profitable divisions.

It was not a paper empire.

But its solvency depended on correcting the concealed debt.

Blackwood Capital appointed a restructuring officer under the loan agreement.

Thousands of employees kept working.

Private jets were grounded.

The Vance estate’s operating budget was frozen under board control.

Victoria called it theft.

The lender called it covenant enforcement.

Arthur asked whether I wanted Blackwood Capital to demand immediate repayment.

“No.”

“You understand Julian used your name.”

“I understand employees did not.”

The restructuring team would sell nonessential assets, investigate fraud, and preserve viable operations.

Revenge would have been faster.

Responsibility was slower.

Dr. Sloane surrendered his license temporarily while the medical board investigated. He admitted Julian’s attorney supplied language for the report but denied knowing violence would occur.

Metadata showed he wrote the predicted paragraph after a meeting with Victoria.

He faced criminal inquiry for attempted falsification of court evidence.

Maya continued therapy.

She stopped wearing tiaras.

When a nurse placed a sticker crown on her chart, Maya asked whether it could follow her.

We explained the beacon in simple language.

“Daddy put something inside your tiara so he could know where you were.”

“Why didn’t he ask?”

“He should have.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Grandpa?”

“No.”

She thought about that.

“Then it was spying.”

“Yes.”

Children often reached the clearest word first.

Genevieve provided prosecutors with a voice memo she had made after the foyer incident.

Julian’s voice said:

“The blow helps us if Eleanor reacts. Keep crying until she does.”

Genevieve answered:

“Maya is bleeding.”

Julian replied:

“Then make sure Eleanor sees it before security arrives.”

He had not been expressionless because he was stunned.

He had been waiting for my reaction.

The recording ended with Victoria asking a quieter question.

“Did Genevieve sign the Blackwood proxy too?”

Julian answered:

“She signed everything.”

Genevieve had witnessed more than one forged document.

When investigators searched her apartment, they found twelve blank pages bearing my copied signature.
