Chapter 3 - WHO TOUCHED MY GRANDDAUGHTER?

The Grand Aster ballroom glittered beneath twelve crystal chandeliers.

The city’s wealthiest families gathered beneath Blackwood banners, though my name appeared nowhere on the program.

For six years, I had asked my father to keep it that way.

I entered through the family corridor holding Maya’s hand.

She wore a fresh cardigan over her party dress. The swelling around her mouth remained visible despite the careful work of the dentist.

Arthur was expected onstage in ten minutes.

He planned to meet us privately first.

Then the ballroom doors opened ahead of schedule.

Maya saw him across the room.

“Grandpa!”

She pulled free.

The orchestra was still playing when she ran between white-clothed tables.

Arthur turned at the sound of her voice.

Maya threw herself into his arms.

He caught her and lifted her against his chest.

Guests began whispering.

Arthur Blackwood had no publicly acknowledged grandchildren.

Across the ballroom, Julian stood beside Genevieve and Victoria.

Julian’s expression shifted from amusement to disbelief.

Genevieve’s hand tightened around his arm.

Maya pointed.

“Grandpa… she’s the lady who hurt me.”

Arthur looked at the swelling around her mouth.

Then he turned.

The orchestra stopped in the middle of a measure.

“Who touched my granddaughter?”

No one answered.

Genevieve’s face lost its color.

Julian recovered first.

“Arthur, this is a private family misunderstanding.”

“My granddaughter has blood on her dress.”

“She tripped.”

Maya shook her head.

“She hit me.”

Arthur looked at Genevieve.

“Did you strike her?”

Genevieve glanced toward Julian.

“It was an instinctive reaction. She destroyed a gown worth forty thousand dollars.”

The words traveled farther than she intended.

Phones appeared around the room.

Arthur raised one hand.

“Do not record the child.”

Security staff moved between guests and Maya, lowering phones without seizing them.

My father did not announce punishment.

He asked the event’s medical director to examine Maya’s discharge instructions. He instructed security to preserve the ballroom and foyer feeds. He requested that Detective Ellis, already handling the case, be contacted.

Julian stepped toward me.

“You planned this.”

“I planned to leave your house with my daughter alive and protected.”

“Without the Vances, you are nothing.”

Arthur’s head turned.

Julian continued before recognizing the danger.

“She arrived with no money, no contacts, and no future. My family gave her a name.”

Arthur handed Maya to me carefully.

“My daughter’s name was established before yours appeared on a business license.”

The room changed again.

Julian stared at me.

“You said you had been disowned.”

“I said I had stepped away.”

“You let me believe—”

“You never asked whether the difference mattered.”

Victoria advanced.

“This is extortion. Eleanor called her father to destroy a company because of a childish accident.”

Harrison appeared beside Arthur holding a thin folder.

“Blackwood Capital has not destroyed anything. It has issued lawful notices of review under existing credit agreements after discovering undisclosed related-party guarantees.”

Julian froze.

“What guarantees?”

Harrison looked at him.

“The ones bearing Eleanor Blackwood’s signature.”

I had signed no corporate guarantees.

Julian knew it.

His confidence cracked for the first time.

Detective Ellis arrived with uniformed officers. Genevieve was asked to accompany them for questioning. She began protesting, then stopped when she saw the medical photographs Claire carried.

Julian tried to leave.

Security did not detain him without authority, but Detective Ellis requested his statement and warned him not to destroy records or contact witnesses.

Arthur took my hand.

“You and Maya are coming home with me.”

I looked around the ballroom.

For years, I had feared this exact moment—the Blackwood name swallowing every decision after I finally used it.

“I will accept protection,” I said. “Not control.”

Arthur’s expression softened.

“Agreed.”

The Grand Aster’s director of security approached Harrison.

“We have a problem.”

“What kind?”

“The Vance estate uses our corporate cybersecurity vendor. Its camera archive synchronized to our emergency servers after someone attempted a remote wipe.”

“Do you have the foyer assault?”

“We have more than that.”

He handed Harrison a tablet.

The first recovered clip showed Genevieve raising her hand toward Maya.

The second was recorded twenty minutes earlier.

Julian stood beside Genevieve in the empty foyer and said:

“Make Eleanor lose control before she reads the final page.”
