Chapter 17 - THE TRIAL BEGINS
Victoria went to trial.
She rejected plea offers.
Her right.
The government had to prove intent beyond reasonable doubt.
Opening statement:
This was not about one bad spreadsheet.
It was about deliberately hiding duplicate recovery and moving responsibility onto lower-level operations before a $310 million acquisition.
Defense:
Sterling had a chaotic returns system.
Rafael committed kickback fraud.
Harrison violated controls.
Victoria tried to stabilize a company while subordinates lied.
Both stories had evidence.
That is what made trial real.
First witnesses:
Forensic accountants.
They explained serial numbers.
Slowly.
No jury should have to become an auditor, but this one nearly did.
Then Northlake diligence director.
She testified:
Potential duplicate-return exposure would have affected valuation and required disclosure.
Would Northlake automatically abandon deal?
“No.”
Important.
Could Sterling have corrected before closing?
“Yes, if disclosed transparently.”
There went Victoria’s necessity defense.
Then Harrison testified.
I did not attend first day.
I watched transcripts later.
Prosecutor:
“Did Victoria order you to sign false exceptions?”
“No.”
Good.
“Did she pressure you to keep shipments moving?”
“Yes.”
“Did you knowingly sign incomplete certifications?”
“Yes.”
“Have you pleaded guilty?”
“Yes.”
Defense attacked.
“You stole company files.”
“Yes.”
“You used another employee’s credentials.”
“Yes.”
“You ran.”
“Yes.”
“You instructed your three-year-old to hide evidence in a doll.”
Harrison closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Your judgment was poor.”
“Yes.”
“Your ethics were poor.”
“At times, yes.”
“Yet this jury should trust you about Victoria.”
“They should trust records where records support me and distrust me where they don’t.”
That answer made headlines.
It also made sense.
Then defense played the recording where Victoria told Harrison:
Bring me proof.
Helpful to her.
Harrison agreed.
“She did say that.”
Then prosecution played later evidence.
Voss.
Historical normalization.
Let him explain why his credentials are everywhere.
The case did not turn on Harrison.
