Chapter 16 - THE INDICTMENT

A grand jury returned charges against Victoria and Rafael.

Rafael had already agreed to plead.

Victoria:

Conspiracy to commit wire fraud tied to specific duplicate-recovery transactions.

False commercial records.

Obstruction related to alteration of diligence data.

Conspiracy to falsify internal handling records.

No attempted kidnapping.

No assault against me.

No dramatic murder plot.

The apartment door was not part of the criminal indictment.

It had scared me.

That was not enough.

Rafael:

Fraud.

Kickback conspiracy.

False records.

He pleaded guilty.

Agreed to restitution.

Sentencing later.

Claire Danton, Victoria’s assistant, received a limited obstruction plea for deleting annotations after preservation duties attached.

She cooperated.

CrownGate supervisor Mason Pike was not charged with stalking.

His surveillance work had been authorized by Sterling to locate Harrison and recover company property.

Investigators found no evidence he intended violence.

Again:

A scary SUV did not automatically become a criminal conspiracy.

The fake license vendor did face charges in a separate counterfeit-document case.

Did Victoria order the state-style fake license?

No proof.

Rafael admitted he did.

He wanted Voss to survive external inspection.

He used Harrison’s photo because:

“He was already on the exceptions.”

That sentence was monstrous in its casualness.

Victoria knew by the last two uses.

That supported conspiracy theory.

Then prosecutors calculated financial harm.

Not easy.

Gross duplicate economic recovery:

$21.6 million.

But:

Some resale value should have offset write-offs.

Some warranty credits were later reversed.

Some equipment had legitimate refurbishment rights.

Independent estimate of unsupported net economic benefit:

Approximately $8.9 million.

Potential customer/manufacturer claims:

Higher due penalties and contract terms.

Rafael personally received:

$620,000 kickbacks.

Victoria personally received no direct scheme payments.

Her motive remained acquisition value and compensation.

That mattered for sentencing later if convicted.

Harrison’s direct personal benefit:

None from scheme.

His retention bonus never paid.

Still false certifications.

The indictment became public.

News called Victoria:

MEDICAL DEVICE FRAUD QUEEN.

I hated it.

Too simple.

She had done enough without mythology.

Ethan was four by then.

He saw her face once on television.

“That door lady.”

“Yes.”

“Is she bad?”

“She is accused of doing serious wrong things. A court has to decide.”

“Daddy court?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy bad?”

May you like

“Daddy did some wrong things too.”

Children deserve nouns, not propaganda.
