Chapter 23 - LUCIANO STEPS AWAY

I stepped down from the Ferraro board completely at sixty-seven.

No honorary executive office.

No daily calls.

No shadow CEO.

Professional governance.

My economic interests remained.

Trust interests remained.

I was still wealthy.

Still Luciano Ferraro.

Just no longer the answer to every question.

At first, I hated it.

Corinne had been right about one thing:

Irrelevance feels like death when your identity was built on being needed.

Ruby noticed.

“You’re becoming Aunt Corinne.”

Cruel.

Effective.

I found other work.

Mentoring.

Investment committee outside Ferraro.

Grandfather duties.

Bad golf.

No family empire.

Then Ferraro Galleria’s joint venture considered selling the remaining sixty percent to Crownstone.

Full exit.

Could happen.

Protected governance review.

Ruby’s branch fiduciaries.

Corinne’s sons’ branch.

Employee trust.

Independent legacy committee.

No rush.

The sale eventually occurred at fair value.

The Galleria left Ferraro control entirely.

Did I grieve?

Yes.

Did that mean it should remain forever?

No.

Assets are not family members.

The building where Ruby’s shoes hit a trash bin became just another property under a REIT.

Vale House had already left.

Malcolm retired.

The brass bins replaced.

Memory persisted only in people.

Then Ruby asked whether I wanted one of the old Galleria signs.

“No.”

“Growth.”

“Shut up.”

She laughed.

No museum.

No shrine.

Then Ferraro Holdings invested elsewhere.

Hotels.

Logistics.

Digital retail.

Company adapted.

Family wealth changed shape.

No one lost belonging because a building sold.

That would have been impossible for Corinne to understand at thirty-nine.

May you like

Maybe difficult for me at forty-two.

Easy now.
