Chapter 11 - THE RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW

The review found mistakes.

Not a criminal empire.

Most decisions under Corinne’s temporary administration were acceptable.

School foundation contributions.

Residence expenses.

Pension votes.

Two debt approvals.

Routine.

Then related-party items.

Corinne’s boutique façade grant:

Independent fair range around $560,000.

Paid:

$780,000.

Potential excess:

$220,000.

After considering flagship marketing value, auditors reduced questionable amount to $145,000.

Repaid through acquisition settlement adjustment.

No criminal charge.

Then boutique marketing reimbursements.

$240,000.

Documentation supported $172,000.

Difference:

$68,000.

Reimbursed.

Then her advisory fee:

$620,000.

Independent value:

$500,000 to $580,000.

Settlement adjustment:

$70,000.

Again.

Not theft of the whole amount.

Then my compensation approval.

My branch had been used in protected review of a bonus package benefiting me.

That was unacceptable governance even though I did not control the branch.

Independent compensation adviser found my pay within market range but certain family performance premiums poorly documented.

I repaid $95,000.

Corinne sent:

We’re both charity now.

I laughed despite myself.

No response.

Then a Galleria property-management contract awarded to a company owned partly by our cousin Dominic.

Pricing about seven percent high.

Services strong.

Contract repriced.

No one arrested.

The audit was less satisfying to people who wanted villains than to people who wanted functioning systems.

Then Hawthorne’s failure.

They accepted too much family-office routing.

Failed to confirm my alleged deferral preference directly.

Allowed Corinne to remain temporary administrator despite Ruby’s legal activation.

They reimbursed review costs and changed controls.

A senior trust officer resigned.

Not criminal.

Institutional accountability.

Then family office director Malcolm? No Malcolm is boutique manager. Need another family office person. Let's name Peter Hale. Peter Hale admitted he relied on Corinne’s instructions. He received formal discipline and lost authority over beneficiary routing.

Then my daughter’s spending file.

Hawthorne ordered it destroyed?

No.

Preserved in legal archive as part of review, but removed from merchant operations.

Good.

No boutique clerk should hold dependency records.

Then Corinne’s assault matter related to my slap? She was victim of my slap, but what about her conduct toward Ruby? She didn't physically harm Ruby except snatching box maybe no assault. Throwing shoes and verbal humiliation. No crime likely. Could there be harassment? Not enough. Keep child welfare evaluation not criminal.

Family court? Corinne had no custody.

I restricted contact.

Could she petition as aunt? No grandparent rights not aunt. So contact was my parental decision unless existing caregiver relationship. She had cared for Ruby after Isabelle died. Could file for third-party visitation in some states, but less likely. We can say no legal right established. I set no contact for now.

Then my diversion.

Completed.

Community service at a family legal-aid clinic? Too symbolic. Better warehouse food bank.

Anger-management.

Charge dismissed.

Ruby asked:

“Can Aunt Corinne come birthday?”

Five months after incident.

“What do you want?”

“She gives good cake.”

Pure.

I was not ready.

“Not this one.”

She shrugged.

No guilt.

Corinne sent no gift.

Good.

Then Bellwether independent review returned.

The deal was still financially plausible.

Crownstone increased offer from $190 million to $196 million after revised leasing data.

No family lease premium.

No Corinne special payment beyond independently valued contractual rights.

Would the transaction close?

Probably.

May you like

The system did not need to destroy the Galleria to prove Ruby mattered.

It only needed to stop treating her existence as an inconvenience.
