Chapter 17 - CORINNE LOSES ANOTHER ARGUMENT

Corinne appealed one audit reimbursement.

The $145,000 façade-grant adjustment.

Her position:

Independent auditors undervalued the flagship marketing benefit Vale & Ferraro provided to the Galleria.

She had evidence.

Foot traffic studies.

Brand-event attendance.

Media impressions.

The review panel agreed partly.

Reimbursement reduced from $145,000 to $92,000.

Corinne won.

I called her.

“You were right.”

Silence.

“Are you dying?”

“No.”

“Say it again.”

“No.”

She laughed.

Accuracy mattered even when it benefited her.

Then Ruby, thirteen, asked:

“Did Aunt Corinne win court?”

“An audit appeal.”

“Does that mean she was right about shoes?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Teenagers have excellent issue separation when adults do not overcomplicate.

Then Corinne’s relationship with Ruby improved.

Not intimate.

Real.

They met for lunch every couple months.

Corinne never paid with family-benefit funds.

Ruby once teased:

“Use family money.”

Corinne answered:

“Absolutely not.”

They laughed.

I felt something unclench.

Then Corinne gave Ruby a summer job at a charity resale shop she supported.

Not Vale House.

No family empire.

Ruby folded clothes badly.

Learned customers can be rude.

Earned normal wages.

Good.

Then she asked me:

“Why do people think rich kids shouldn’t work?”

“Because people like simple stories.”

“Do I have to work?”

“To survive financially? Probably not in the same way.”

She stared.

“Then why?”

“To build a life.”

Better.

No fake poverty lessons.

Then I stepped down as CEO at fifty-eight.

Not scandal.

Succession.

A professional executive replaced me.

I remained board chair temporarily.

Ferraro Holdings continued.

No son.

No daughter heir.

No throne.

Ruby was sixteen and interested in veterinary medicine.

Corinne said:

“At least it’s not retail.”

Ruby said:

“Exactly.”

I pretended not to be offended.

Then the Galleria completed its renovation.

Vale House became one of dozens of tenants.

No longer family flagship.

Corinne visited opening night as invited former founder.

She behaved.

No speech.

No claim.

Malcolm had become regional director.

Good.

The boutique lived beyond its founder.

May you like

Corinne lived beyond the boutique.

Both took longer than expected.
