Chapter 24 - MILES AT EAST HARBOR

Miles turned twenty-one and accepted a full-time role at the East Harbor successor company after college internship.

Not executive.

Analyst.

He hated that I told people he started with spreadsheets.

Good.

Helena, twenty-two, worked on coastal resilience projects.

Serena’s architecture firm collaborated with municipalities.

Bastian’s consultancy did well.

Faye remarried.

Adrian remained steady.

Family.

Messy.

Then someone in business press discovered Miles was “the male heir Bianca Coletti once presented as Montesi successor.”

Headline.

Miles was furious.

He released one short statement through company:

“I am not a Montesi trust beneficiary. I work here as an employee.”

Perfect.

Then reporter asked Helena:

“Are you the real heir?”

She said:

“There is no throne.”

Even better.

Then old social media footage of the family dinner surfaced.

Bianca pushing Serena.

My slap.

No audio? Some clip maybe. The family had preserved security for legal case; leak from unknown. We don't need investigate? Could be former staff, but no need. It became public.

People glorified my slap.

I hated that.

Interviews called me “protective Mafia father.”

I issued:

“I should have protected my daughter without retaliatory violence after she was safe.”

Boring.

Necessary.

Then younger men online called me weak for apologizing.

I survived that too.

Serena smiled.

“Growth.”

“Do not enjoy this.”

She enjoyed.

Then Bianca, very old, saw clip again.

She called Serena.

“I looked monstrous.”

“You were cruel.”

“Different?”

“Sometimes.”

Good.

Then she said:

“I’m glad you stayed standing.”

Serena answered:

“I didn’t. Dad helped me up.”

Important.

People need help.

No shame.

Then Miles asked Bianca:

“Did you really think I would inherit everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even though I wasn’t Alaric’s descendant?”

“I convinced myself marriage made lines flexible when it benefited us.”

He nodded.

“Bad math.”

Yes.

Then East Harbor promoted Miles after four years.

Merit.

Not family.

He eventually supervised people older than him.

I warned:

“Authority is not proof of worth.”

He rolled eyes.

Family slogans.

Then Helena chose to reduce one future direct distribution, keeping more assets in managed trust for philanthropy and long-term investment.

Her choice under allowed provisions.

No sainthood.

She kept plenty.

Then she funded a maternal legal-aid program anonymously? Nice but maybe too symbolic. She chose a pregnancy legal-rights nonprofit partly because Serena's story. Fine, but not overdo.

Then Serena said:

“You don’t owe trauma charity.”

“I know. I like the work.”

Good.

No compulsory meaning.

The children were old enough to choose what, if anything, the past produced.

That was the whole point.
