Chapter 18 - SERENA MARRIES AGAIN

Serena married Adrian when Helena was five.
Small ceremony.
No Montesi hall.
No ornate chairs.
No family succession speeches.
Bastian attended the reception for one hour because Helena wanted both parents there.
That decision took courage from everyone.
He shook Adrian’s hand.
Awkward.
Civil.
Then Faye arrived later with Miles because Helena asked.
The family photograph looked like a custody diagram.
Serena laughed.
Good.
Bianca did not attend ceremony at Serena’s request.
She sent a card.
No complaint.
Progress.
Then Helena asked:
“Is Adrian Dad?”
Serena said:
“He is Adrian. Your dad is Bastian. You can choose what affectionate name feels right over time.”
Good.
No replacement.
Then trust.
Adrian received no beneficial rights.
No household representation by marriage.
Nobody cared.
The legal structure that once seemed suspicious now felt normal.
Then Bastian asked Serena privately:
“Did you ever think we could have repaired it?”
She answered:
“No.”
Not cruel.
Clear.
Then:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Forgive me?”
“Some things.”
Her phrase.
Then:
“I trust you with Helena more than I did three years ago. That matters more.”
Bastian cried.
No reconciliation.
Accountability through parenting.
Then Faye eventually partnered with someone else.
Miles gained another caring adult.
No inheritance relevance.
Good.
Then Bianca’s contact with Helena began.
Therapeutic first.
She did not bring gifts.
She said:
“I pushed your mommy when you were in her tummy.”
Helena looked horrified.
“Why?”
“Because I thought your being a girl meant something about grown-up family power. I was wrong.”
Helena frowned.
“Girls good.”
“Yes.”
“Boys good.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
Bianca laughed sadly.
“Exactly.”
Children dismantle patriarchy brutally.
Then Helena asked:
“Did you hurt me?”
“You were inside your mommy. The doctors said you were okay, but what I did could have hurt both of you.”
Good.
No minimization.
Then Helena said:
“Don’t.”
“I won’t.”
The visit ended.
No hug required.
Later, Helena chose another.
Then Miles met Bianca and Helena together.
Bianca nearly said:
“My two—”
She stopped.
Then:
“My grandchildren.”
Correct.
No heir.
Then my company.
I stepped down as CEO.
Professional successor.
Not Bastian.
Not Serena.
Not because family failed.
Because competent management mattered.
I remained board chair for transition.
Some old relatives complained.
“Montesi needs a Montesi.”
I answered:
“Montesi needs profit and lawful governance.”
Helena would have applauded.
Then Serena joined no board.
She stayed architect.
Bastian stayed at Coletti Freight but never regained CEO role.
Faye built marketing firm.
Children went to school.
The empire did not collapse because blood stopped running everything.
That fact would have destroyed my father.
I found it peaceful.
Then Sterling proposed formally removing all remaining historical references to “household branch” from current summaries.
Not trust text where legally meaningful.
Summaries.
Approved.
Clear language.

No future Bastian should find ambiguity and build a fantasy.
The paperwork finally started speaking like the family we claimed to be.
