Chapter 11 - CORRECTING THE RECORD

Once a false financial story enters the world, correcting it is slower than creating it.

Sterling sent formal notices to First Dominion Bank, the East Harbor transaction advisers, and parties that had received authorized trust information.

Not:

Bastian is a fraud.

Only:

Bastian Coletti has no authority to represent Serena Montesi’s trust interests or the Montesi Preservation Trust. No male-successor designation exists. Any contrary representation is unauthorized.

Precise.

First Dominion froze further draws on Coletti Ventures’ credit line pending review.

Not because Montesi collateral vanished.

There had never been Montesi collateral.

Because borrower disclosures might have been materially misleading.

Coletti Freight continued operating.

Employees still got paid.

No instant bankruptcy.

Then the $12 million investor demanded clarification.

Bastian’s lawyers argued the pitch deck said “expected,” not “guaranteed.”

True.

But the omitted warnings from Venn’s memorandum created problems.

Regulators began asking whether material limitations had been intentionally removed.

No charges yet.

Then divorce.

Serena filed on grounds available under local law, with adultery evidence relevant depending property rules.

The court did not award her everything because Bastian cheated.

Marital property remained marital property.

The house.

Joint investments.

Retirement accounts.

Business interests acquired during marriage.

Valuation required.

Her trust remained largely separate subject to tracing.

Good.

Then pregnancy.

Serena wanted Bastian at the birth?

No.

Medical choice.

But she agreed he could receive notice after delivery if safe.

He asked for ultrasound updates.

She allowed written medical summaries about the baby, not herself.

Boundaries.

Then Faye.

She confirmed prenatal testing showed Bastian was overwhelmingly likely the father? Prenatal paternity tests can exist, but no need high-stakes. She chose to wait until birth for legal establishment.

Good.

No laboratory circus.

Then Bianca’s assault case.

She accepted a misdemeanor plea.

Probation.

Parenting/family-violence education despite victim being adult daughter-in-law.

No jail given age, no record, no serious injury.

No contact with Serena except through counsel during defined period.

She called the sentence humiliating.

Serena said:

“She pushed me while I was eight months pregnant.”

Correct.

Then my slap.

I entered a conditional diversion program.

Anger-management sessions.

Community service.

No violence.

Bastian did not oppose.

Maybe he enjoyed it.

Fine.

I deserved the inconvenience.

Then Serena asked:

“Do you regret hitting him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you regret stopping him?”

“No.”

Separate.

Good.

Then board governance.

I banned informal family access to transaction committees.

If Bastian wanted to present Coletti Freight merger, he could do so as executive with counsel, data room, conflicts disclosed.

Not son-in-law.

Same for any relative.

The first meeting under new rules felt absurdly formal.

Excellent.

Then East Harbor merger review resumed.

Coletti Freight was genuinely useful.

I hated that.

Bastian could have a valid business proposal while behaving monstrously as husband.

Life refuses clean villains.

Then Sterling commissioned independent valuation.

Possible synergies real.

Coletti debt real.

Merger might benefit both companies under different management.

Bastian wanted COO role.

Conflict committee would decide.

Then an email surfaced in marital discovery.

Bianca to Bastian:

Once Serena is medically sidelined, submit her preference letter and demand provisional recognition. If Sterling delays, tell East Harbor partners silence equals no objection.

Julian laughed.

“Silence never equals consent in this trust.”

Bastian replied:

I know. It only needs to sound that way for a week.

There.

Intent.

Not inheritance ignorance.

He knew the legal path was weak.

He wanted market perception.

That email changed the case.

Not family court.

Financial regulators.

And suddenly Bastian’s biggest risk was not losing Serena’s money.

It was explaining why he deliberately planned to present uncertainty as authority.
