Chapter 4 - THE CAMERA THAT DISAPPEARED
Margaret denied knowing who removed the camera.
Michael blamed the departing audiovisual crew.
The crew supervisor produced an inventory showing his company had installed cameras only in the ballroom and front entrance.
The kitchen unit belonged to a private security contractor called Crown Meridian.
Crown Meridian specialized in internal investigations, executive-risk monitoring, and litigation support.
The firm’s client was Carter Family Holdings.
Michael had authorized the contract.
Its stated purpose was to document “workplace instability during the Legacy Gala.”
I was the only nonemployee named in the monitoring plan.
Rachel read the contract in her office while Daniel paced near the window.
“They expected something to happen in that kitchen,” I said.
“The camera began recording two days before the party,” Rachel answered.
“Why?”
“That is what we intend to learn.”
Crown Meridian refused voluntary disclosure, claiming the files involved confidential corporate security.
Rachel sought an emergency order.
Before the hearing, the company reported that the kitchen camera had never uploaded footage because of a defective network connection.
The red light above me had blinked for two days.
A defective connection did not explain why someone stole the device.
Luis Ortega, the estate’s temporary banquet manager, contacted me privately.
He had seen Ashley and Michael watching the kitchen feed on a tablet during rehearsals.
“They kept adjusting the angle,” he said. “Ms. Ashley wanted your face and hands visible.”
“Did they explain why?”
“They called it an employee-relations demonstration.”
“I’m not their employee.”
“I know.”
Luis provided a photograph of the tablet screen. I stood at the sink wearing the same stained apron.
A timestamp placed the image six hours before Daniel returned.
In the corner of the screen appeared a file label:
E.W. VOLUNTARY SERVICE — DAY THREE.
They had renamed coercion as voluntary work.
The prosecutor reviewing Daniel’s slap charge received the full kitchen statements. Ashley requested a protective order against him.
The judge granted a temporary no-contact order but rejected her request to bar Daniel from Carter company offices without evidence of continuing danger there.
Margaret appeared in court wearing a smaller diamond necklace and the expression of a grieving mother.
“My son was manipulated by his wife.”
Daniel did not react.
His attorney entered the citation and stated Daniel would accept responsibility for striking Ashley while contesting exaggerated claims.
The judge ordered anger-management counseling as a pretrial condition.
Outside court, reporters surrounded us.
Someone had released a seven-second clip from the kitchen.
It began with Daniel’s hand moving.
It ended with Ashley on the floor.
My burns, the pot, and the camera were outside the frame.
The caption called me:
THE WIFE WHO MADE A BROTHER ATTACK HIS SISTER.

Crown Meridian had lied.
