Chapter 14 - THE BACKUP SERVER
The facility did not burn.
Smoke from an overheated battery triggered the alarm.
During the evacuation, someone used a stolen technician badge to enter the server cage.
The backup drive containing Carter footage disappeared.
Cameras captured a masked person leaving with a hard case.
The badge belonged to a Crown Meridian employee named Scott Vale.
Scott said he lost it days earlier.
Phone records placed him near the facility.
Police searched his apartment and found the hard case empty.
Michael’s attorney called any connection speculative.
Then investigators recovered a transfer from Ashley’s personal account to Scott’s brother.
Amount: forty thousand dollars.
Memo: consulting.
Ashley claimed she paid for home-security advice.
Scott’s brother installed no security system.
Ashley’s legal exposure widened from abuse and forgery to evidence tampering.
Her protective order still prevented Daniel from contacting her.
I had no such restriction.
Rachel advised me not to call.
I listened.
For once, restraint was not surrender.
Police recovered the drive from a storm drain after Scott agreed to cooperate.
Water damaged it.
A forensic laboratory rebuilt portions.
The full footage showed three days.
Margaret directing security to keep my phone.
Michael testing camera angles.
Ashley changing cleaning chemicals after I complained that my hands burned.
Me attempting to leave through the service corridor.
A guard blocking the door.
Michael placing the layered resignation form beneath a delivery receipt.
Margaret saying:
“If she signs, the trust problem disappears before Daniel lands.”
Ashley answered:
“And if she doesn’t?”
“Then make her angry enough that no director wants her holding power.”
The recording captured Daniel’s arrival.
His shock.
My flinch.
The slap.
My command to stop.
It also captured Margaret’s first question.
Where is the document?
The edited clip lost its force once the entire sequence existed.
It did not erase Daniel’s strike.
It placed his act inside evidence rather than propaganda.
Scott admitted Michael ordered him to retrieve the backup. Ashley supplied payment. Crown Meridian’s director knew about the request but claimed he believed it was lawful client-property recovery.
The prosecutor filed obstruction charges against Michael and Ashley.
Margaret remained uncharged while investigators evaluated her role.
She used the delay publicly.
“My children made errors while trying to protect a family company. Emily is criminalizing loyalty.”
Rosa Delgado responded at the next employee meeting.
“Loyalty that spends our pensions is theft with better manners.”
The sentence spread farther than Margaret’s statement.
Michael’s attorneys offered to resign permanently if the trust released him from civil claims.
I refused.
Resignation could protect the company.
It could not purchase immunity.
