Chapter 1 - THE POT THAT HIT THE FLOOR

Ashley slammed another grease-coated pot into the sink beside me.
Hot water leaped over the rim and struck my soaked blouse. Degreaser ran into the cracks around my fingernails.
“Move faster. The guests are waiting.”
My hands were already red and swollen. Every time I closed my fingers around the scrubbing pad, the skin across my knuckles split a little farther.
“I’ve cleaned everything you brought in.”
Ashley folded her arms.
“The roasting pans are still dirty.”
“There are four kitchen employees outside.”
“They are serving people who matter.”
The words landed more softly than the pot.
For three days, Ashley had told me Daniel wanted me to help his family prepare for the party. Each time I asked for my phone, she said it was charging in Margaret’s office. Each time I asked to leave, Michael reminded me that Daniel had requested “no more embarrassing family conflict” while he was overseas.
I had believed the messages because they came from Daniel’s account.
I had believed them even after Margaret locked my car keys inside her desk.
The kitchen door opened behind Ashley.
A suitcase wheel struck the threshold.
I turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway wearing the tailored suit he had taken to Zurich. His hair was damp from rain. One hand remained around the handle of his suitcase.
The pot slipped from my fingers.
It struck the tiled floor with a deafening crash.
Daniel looked first at my face.
Then at the stained apron.
Then at my hands.
The color drained from him.
“Emily… what have they done to you?”
Ashley spun around.
“Daniel?”
He crossed the kitchen in three strides.
When he reached for me, I flinched.
His hands stopped.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
“It’s me,” he whispered.
I forced myself to place my fingers in his palms.
He turned them over carefully.
My wedding ring sat above skin swollen nearly twice its normal size. Red burns circled both wrists where wet gloves had rubbed for hours.
“Finally, you’re home.”
My voice broke on the last word.
Daniel removed his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders. The fabric smelled of rain and airplane air.
Something small and solid pressed against my arm from inside the pocket.
A box.
I saw only one dark velvet corner before Daniel pulled the jacket closed.
Beyond the service doors, music played beneath hundreds of voices. Crystal glasses chimed. Someone announced another bottle of champagne.
Daniel looked through the narrow glass panel.
The ballroom glowed with flowers, silver candles, and people dressed for a gala no one had told me would be this large.
Then his gaze lifted.
A ceiling camera above the sink blinked red.
He became completely still.
Ashley backed toward the door.
Margaret and Michael appeared behind her.
Margaret wore emerald silk and diamonds. Michael held a champagne glass.
Ashley’s arrogance collapsed.
“Daniel… you weren’t supposed to be back until next week.”
Daniel stepped away from me.
He crossed the space between them and slapped her.
The impact turned Ashley’s head and sent her sideways. Her heel slipped on the wet tile. She crashed onto the floor beside the broken pot.
Guests gasped beyond the doorway.
I grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Stop.”
He looked down at Ashley with rage twisting his face.
“I’m back to clear out the trash.”
Michael reached for him.
Daniel raised one hand.
“Touch me and I call the police before you finish the mistake.”
Margaret stared at Daniel’s suitcase.
Not at Ashley.
Not at my hands.
At the suitcase.
“Where is the document?” she asked.
Daniel moved in front of it.
“What document?” I whispered.
Margaret’s eyes found mine.

For the first time in three days, she looked afraid of me.
Then the red light above the sink stopped blinking.
