Chapter 25 - The Last Conversation

Elise contacted Vivienne.
Not the other way.
Through mediator.
One hour.
No criminal issue.
No settlement.
No agenda beyond closure.
I asked:
“Why?”
Elise said:
“Because I want to know whether not speaking is still mine.”
Good.
They met.
Afterward Elise told me only what mattered.
Vivienne looked older.
Less polished.
Still herself.
Elise asked:
“Do you think you loved Dominic?”
Vivienne answered:
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
Elise:
“Then why was love not enough to let either of us choose?”
Vivienne cried.
“I thought love meant knowing what would happen if I let go.”
There.
Control.
Then Elise asked:
“Would you do it again?”
“No.”
“Even if I disappeared willingly?”
“I would give you one night. Then I would call a lawyer, police, somebody who wasn’t me.”
Good.
Then:
“What about the ring?”
Vivienne said:
“I wore it because I wanted to prove you were gone and punish myself for knowing you weren’t.”
Ugly.
Honest.
Then:
“Did you really think I would never come back?”
“By the wedding, I needed to.”
There.
Not believed.
Needed.
Then Elise said:
“I forgive you.”
I stared when she told me.
She raised hand.
“Not done.”
Then:
“I also don’t want you in my life.”
There.
Forgiveness without access.
Vivienne answered:
“I understand.”
Then no hug.
No future meeting.
Finished.
Elise left.
Then she said to me:
“I meant it.”
“Forgive?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I stopped wanting her life to shrink because mine did.”
That was hers.
I did not need same.
Then:
“Do you forgive?”
“Some days.”
“Fair.”
Then Aria asked whether Mommy met Vivienne.
We told.
“Are friends?”
“No.”
“Then why meet?”
“Sometimes adults need to finish a conversation.”
“Did?”
“Yes.”
Good.
Then no more.
Vivienne never requested Aria contact.
Boundary held.
Then one unexpected normal event:
Aria’s school required emergency contact review.
She asked whether Vivienne still on any old forms.
No.
Of course.
Then she said:
“Good.”
Done.
Then my old mansion.
We had mostly moved out years earlier.
I decided to sell.
Elise agreed? It was mine.
I asked because family memory.
She said:
“Sell.”
Aria:
“Ballroom?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
No attachment.
The house sold to a hotel developer? Could be too symbolic. To private buyer.
No media access.
We moved remaining belongings.
Ballroom empty.
I stood where Elise walked in.
No ghosts.
Just room.
Then Elise came beside me with cane.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
Then Aria yelled from hallway:
“Found cookies!”
House almost gone.
Good.
Then closing.
No secret compartment.
No ring.
No documents.
We handed keys.
Done.
Then at new home, simpler, no ballroom, we hosted first Christmas.
Small.
Twenty people.
No head table.
One long wooden table.
Aria chose seat near kitchen because quickest dessert access.
Elise sat beside her.
I sat across.
No one claimed chairs.
That should have been enough to end.
But one concrete consequence remained:
Vivienne’s name still appeared as beneficiary on an old life-insurance policy I had forgotten to update during engagement.
Routine audit caught.
No new twist? This would be late surprise document—avoid. Don't.
Instead all admin already updated.
Good.
Then Rafe announced retirement from full-time security after twenty years.
Not dramatic.
He became consultant.
I complained.
He ignored.
Then Aria asked:
“Who protects?”
“Systems.”
Rafe laughed.
“Finally.”
The story had moved from people as control to systems as safety.
The next chapter would close the remaining business and family timelines.
May you like
Then four months later, CH27.
Need CH26 final closure first.
