Chapter 20 - Aria Asks

Aria was eight when she asked.
Not because Vivienne contacted.
Because another child at school knew the old wedding video.
Internet never completely forgets.
“Daddy, Vivienne bad forever?”
I sat.
“No.”
“Then why can’t see?”
“Because someone can change and you can still have boundaries.”
“Mommy?”
Elise was there.
She answered:
“I don’t want contact.”
“Me?”
“You’re a child. We make safety decisions for now. When you’re much older, you’ll make more.”
Aria frowned.
“She slapped? No, she tore dress and made me fall.”
“Yes.”
“She went jail for Mommy stuff.”
“Yes.”
“Does she say sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
Elise looked at me.
Then Aria.
“Sorry is important. It does not erase consequences.”
Good.
Then Aria said:
“I don’t want see.”
“Okay.”
Done.
No adults persuading.
Then protective order expired? We can keep renewed. At some point Elise decides not to extend after years of compliance. Later.
Then Vivienne’s supervised release ended after full term.
No violations.
Criminal restrictions ended.
Professional restrictions remained separately.
Still no family access.
Then she moved to another state?
Could reduce tension. Maybe nearby because family. But no need.
She took job at a commercial design firm.
No issue.
Then Cross Harbor dissolved after client-book sale.
Financial chapter closed.
Then Elise and I became more serious.
Two years dating.
No rush.
She still kept own house.
Then she asked:
“Would you marry me again?”
I nearly dropped coffee.
She smiled.
“I’m not proposing.”
“Good, because my answer would be embarrassing.”
Then:
“I’m asking if you would.”
“Yes.”
Immediate.
She looked away.
“Okay.”
No proposal yet.
Then months later I did.
At kitchen table.
No ballroom.
No crowd.
Simple ring? Not old ring. New.
I asked:
“Elise, do you want to choose me again?”
She cried.
“Yes.”
There.
Choice.
Then Aria screamed when told.
“Wedding!”
Both of us flinched.
Then laughed.
No Vivienne.
No old dress required.
Aria wanted to wear mother's old dress but too small. So she carried a small piece? Better not alter. She chose new dress.
Good.
Then question:
Would we invite extended Ravello family?
Some.
Not all.
Uncle Matteo only after apology? Maybe.
Then Rafe:
“Do I need double security?”
“No.”
“Single?”
“Yes.”
We still had public profile.
Then Elise said:
“No huge ballroom.”
Agreed.
Small garden at her house.
Forty guests.
No cameras.
No press.
Then the old ring.
Elise decided not to use.
New ring.
The old platinum band remained for Aria when adult.
Good.
Then wedding occurred uneventfully.
No attack.
No secret arrival.
No twist.
That is important.
Elise walked without cane for short aisle, but kept it nearby.
No miracle.
Aria stood between us during vows? Could be.
Then vows included no grand trauma.
We chose.
Done.
Then after wedding Aria asked:
“Now Mommy live Daddy house?”
Elise:
“No.”
We laughed.
Actually we planned to keep both houses? Maybe eventually combine. They chose Elise’s house because mine had ghosts.
I sold Ravello mansion? Maybe not. Could keep as family property but move into renovated neutral house. Better:
We bought a new home together six months later, smaller and less fortress-like.
My old house remained corporate guest residence? Could sell.
No need.
Then marriage again changed no legal case.
Good.
Then Vivienne learned publicly.
No contact.
No drama.
Then Elise said:
“I waited for reaction.”
“Me too.”
Nothing.
That was healing.
The person who once controlled our lives no longer had to remain center.
Then Aria placed old dress in storage box with ring separate.
No shrine.
Then one day she asked:
“Can I throw dress away someday?”
Elise said:
“Yes.”
I looked surprised.
“It’s hers.”
Right.
No object ownership by adults.
She kept.
For now.
Then final legal piece:
Elise chose not to renew protective order after many years and full compliance, but private boundary remained.
Was that safe? Yes, if no contact in years. She notified attorney.
Vivienne did not appear to challenge.
No sudden visit.
Proof.
Then Elise said:
“I don’t need court to make her stay away because she’s already staying away.”
Good.
Could reapply if needed.
Done.
The last phase became ordinary family life.
May you like
But one meeting remained—not because court required it.
Because Elise eventually wanted to speak to Vivienne once, with no child present, before deciding whether the past could stop taking up space in her future.
