Chapter 17 - GRANDMA COMES TO DINNER

Beatrice arrived at Villa Castellano as a guest.

That distinction mattered.

She rang the bell.

She did not use her old access code.

The professional house manager opened the door.

I invited her in.

She noticed the round table immediately.

“Still ugly.”

Amelia laughed.

“I picked chairs.”

Beatrice looked at her.

“Then they are beautiful.”

Too fast.

Amelia narrowed her eyes.

“Liar.”

I almost choked.

Beatrice laughed genuinely.

“Fair.”

Dinner was:

Me.

Amelia.

Beatrice.

Valeria.

Julian.

Marcus.

One therapist on call but not physically present.

No extended family.

No staff hovering.

Then Amelia dropped her fork.

Nobody flinched except the adults.

She noticed.

“Just fork.”

“Yes,” I said.

Then Julian bumped his glass.

Water spilled.

Valeria grabbed a napkin.

No shame.

Good.

Halfway through, Amelia’s leg began aching.

She asked for the brace.

I brought it.

Beatrice watched.

Then said:

“Do you want help?”

Amelia looked at me.

I did not answer.

She looked back at Beatrice.

“No.”

“Okay.”

Good.

Then Amelia put it on herself.

Clumsy.

Slow.

Beatrice did not correct.

Then the succession question arrived because Julian had no sense of timing.

“Grandma, why did you want my stuff and Amelia’s stuff together?”

Beatrice set down her fork.

“Because I thought one branch would be easier for the family.”

“Why me?”

“Because I had unfair ideas about boys and strength.”

Julian nodded.

“Therapy answer.”

Valeria laughed.

Beatrice looked offended.

“It is also true.”

Good.

Then Amelia said:

“Do you still want?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because easier for adults is not a good reason to take options from children.”

Excellent.

Then she added:

“And because the trust already has professionals for difficult decisions.”

Boring.

Accurate.

I smiled.

Then dessert.

No cake disaster.

No documents.

At the end, Beatrice stood.

“Thank you for letting me come.”

Amelia said:

“You can come another time.”

Beatrice’s eyes filled.

“Okay.”

No emotional burden.

Then my mother looked at me.

I nodded.

Enough.

She left.

Valeria stayed.

We had not been alone since the assault.

She said:

“Do you forgive me?”

I hated the question.

“I trust you around Amelia under the current rules.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“It is the answer I have.”

She accepted.

Then:

“Do you regret slapping me?”

“Yes.”

“Still?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then I asked:

“Do you regret the brace?”

“Every time I see one.”

Specific.

We did not hug.

Not yet.

Then Julian came looking for her.

Family moment over.

Then the round table.

After everyone left, Amelia climbed into my lap.

“Good dinner.”

“Yes.”

“Grandma not boss.”

“No.”

“You boss?”

I almost answered automatically.

Then stopped.

“I’m your dad.”

“Different?”

“Very.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Can boss have dessert?”

“Go to bed.”

She laughed.

The house was quiet after.

No one had claimed a throne.

No one had lost one.

May you like

Beatrice had entered as grandmother and left as grandmother.

For the first time, that role was enough.
