Chapter 12 - JULIAN WAS NOT THE STRONG ONE

Julian’s therapist called Valeria first.

Then Marcus.

Then me because Amelia was involved in the family context.

Julian had begun exercising excessively for a nine-year-old.

Push-ups.

Running stairs.

Refusing dessert.

Why?

“Strong heirs don’t get replaced.”

Beatrice’s language had poisoned both children.

One was weak because of a brace.

The other had to remain strong enough to deserve what he already had.

Different sides of the same cruelty.

Valeria cried when she heard.

She had repeated Beatrice’s language around him for years.

“He’s healthy. He’s built like a Castellano. He’ll carry the family.”

Compliments, she thought.

Assignments, he heard.

Therapy changed focus.

No succession talk.

No heir talk.

No body-performance talk.

Julian resumed normal meals gradually.

Then Valeria asked me to help.

Not financially.

Emotionally.

“Can you tell him you don’t want his branch?”

I almost laughed.

“Of course.”

I met Julian with Marcus present.

“Do I have to give anything back?” he asked.

“No.”

“Amelia?”

“No.”

“Then why Grandma wanted ours together?”

“Because adults sometimes think one system is easier than two.”

“And because I’m boy?”

“Yes.”

He looked angry.

“Stupid.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“If I’m bad at company?”

“You are nine.”

“I mean later.”

“You can work somewhere else.”

His face changed.

“Really?”

“Really.”

That possibility had never been presented.

Then Amelia joined us after therapy.

She walked in wearing her brace.

Julian looked at it.

“Does it hurt?”

“Sometimes.”

“Can I touch?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Boundary.

Then they played a game.

No branch.

Good.

Then Beatrice’s own therapy.

Voluntary after the court removed her roles.

She had not yet apologized.

Her therapist’s limited summary, shared only because Beatrice authorized it for future contact review, said:

Beatrice continues to equate family survival with concentrated authority and experiences loss of control as loss of identity.

Accurate.

Then another line:

She recognizes that she used disability and gender as symbolic evidence for preexisting preferences.

Better.

Then my mother called me through counsel.

“I want to see Julian.”

Not my decision.

Valeria and Marcus handled.

They allowed one supervised video call.

Julian asked:

“Do I have to be heir?”

Beatrice cried.

“No.”

That answer apparently cost her something.

Then:

“Is Amelia weak?”

“No.”

“Then why say?”

Beatrice took a long time.

“Because I wanted everyone to agree with me.”

Children understand that.

Julian said:

“Bad reason.”

“Yes.”

Then he left.

No apology demand.

Good.

Then the Port Azure board approved phase one.

Beatrice was not present.

The meeting lasted four hours.

No family collapse.

No missing matriarch catastrophe.

Professional advisers did their jobs.

Then I received the updated family-governance chart.

My name.

Valeria.

Independent mission trustee.

No Beatrice in succession roles.

I felt relief.

Then guilt.

She was my mother.

Both.

I did not need to choose one feeling.

Then my diversion counselor asked what I taught Amelia by slapping Valeria.

“That Dad will hurt people who hurt her.”

“Do you want that?”

“No.”

“Then what do you teach instead?”

“Use systems.”

I hated how corporate that sounded.

The counselor smiled.

“Try again.”

“Protect her without making her responsible for my anger.”

Better.

Then Amelia asked why I had not worn my signet ring since the birthday.

I had left it in a drawer after she returned it.

“I’m thinking.”

“About what?”

“What it means.”

“It’s just ring.”

Children again.

I laughed.

Maybe she was right.

Then she said:

“Can I wear?”

“No. Too big.”

“Later?”

“If you want.”

Choice.

Not succession.

Then Valeria’s no-contact period with Amelia approached its end.

Therapists recommended a controlled meeting.

Amelia said maybe.

Valeria wanted desperately to apologize.

No one let her rush.

The woman who tore off the brace would now have to sit across from a child who could end the meeting whenever she wanted.
