Chapter 25 - MIREYA’S INHALER

At twenty-eight, Mireya still carried a rescue inhaler.

Rarely used.

Asthma improved with age but did not vanish completely.

One afternoon she left it at my house.

I saw the pouch on the kitchen counter.

For one irrational second my body reacted.

Protect.

Secure.

Call.

Then I laughed.

I texted:

You left inhaler.

She replied:

Keep it. I have backup.

Then:

Don’t hide it from me.

Dark humor.

I stared at the message.

Then laughed harder.

She called.

“Too soon?”

“Twenty-four years.”

“So no?”

“Apparently still funny.”

Good.

The object had become ordinary enough to joke about.

May you like

Not completely.

Enough.
