Chapter 20 - ASTHMA AT EIGHT

By eight, Mireya’s asthma was better controlled.

Not gone.

Seasonal allergies still triggered symptoms.

Viral infections sometimes.

She played soccer.

Kept a rescue inhaler with coach according to plan.

No dramatic miracle.

One game, she ran off the field.

“Chest.”

Coach followed protocol.

Assessment.

Inhaler.

Rest.

Symptoms improved.

I arrived six minutes later because I was in the stands.

Mireya grinned.

“Didn’t die.”

I stared.

“Please never phrase it like that.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Tove used to say I didn’t need it.”

“I know.”

“She was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“How do we know coach right?”

“Because coach follows your doctor’s plan.”

Rules external to family ego.

Good.

At school, Mireya wrote an essay:

Something adults get wrong.

Her answer:

Adults think kids don’t know their bodies because kids don’t know big words.

Her teacher sent it to me.

I cried privately.

No need to turn every assignment into a trauma award.

She got a B-plus because grammar was messy.

Good.

Life.
