Chapter 6

The forged assignment led to a criminal investigation.
Not immediately.
Corporate fraud cases do not begin with dramatic arrests.
Attorneys preserved records.
Forensic examiners reviewed metadata.
The board notified insurers and lenders.
The district attorney referred parts to state investigators.
The assignment file had been created on Chloe’s laptop.
Its first draft carried a title:
CLAIRE IP TAKEOVER.
The file history showed edits by Richard and Mason Reed.
My mother added a comment:
Use deceased notary. No verification risk.
That sentence ended her claim that she believed the document was real.
Mason told investigators he had followed family instructions and assumed I agreed.
His messages with Chloe said otherwise.
Mason:
What if Claire fights this?
Chloe:
Mom says she won’t. Claire always folds when Emma is involved.
Mason:
How is Emma involved?
Chloe:
Custody and money. Mom has leverage.
I had no custody dispute.
Daniel was dead.
What leverage?
The answer emerged from my father’s estate-planning files.
After Daniel died, I created a trust for Emma.
Life-insurance proceeds.
My Northstar shares if I died.
Education funds.
My parents were not trustees.
My mother had asked repeatedly to become one.
I refused.
Eleanor later drafted a family guardianship petition that would nominate Chloe as Emma’s caregiver if I became “professionally or emotionally incapacitated.”
It had no legal force without my consent or a court order.
They had nevertheless created a plan.
The family file was titled:
CONTINUITY IF CLAIRE DESTABILIZES.
It described possible evidence:
Claire’s obsessive work habits.
Social isolation after Daniel’s death.
Hostility toward family support.
Emotional overreaction involving Emma.
The birthday party had been listed under:
Potential Trigger Event.
I read the page three times.
“Was the humiliation deliberate?” Leah asked.
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
My mother’s note appeared beneath the event plan:
Center celebration on Chloe/Coco. Minimal acknowledgment for Emma. Claire may create public scene demonstrating instability.
They wanted me to explode.
The guest list included board members and potential buyers.
If I shouted, threatened, or removed system access during the party, they would describe me as unstable before the sale.
I had walked away quietly.
Then acted through contracts and counsel.
My restraint destroyed the story they had prepared.
Emma’s pain had been bait.
I left Leah’s office and became sick in the parking garage.

Not because I was surprised my parents manipulated me.
Because they had looked at an eight-year-old child and calculated the value of breaking her heart.
