Chapter 13

Emma did not become happy the moment the verdict arrived.

For months, she asked whether birthdays were real.

When classmates gave her invitations, she wanted proof that the party was actually for them.

She stopped opening gifts in front of people.

She worried that gratitude could be used against her.

Dr. Ortiz helped us rebuild celebration as choice rather than performance.

For Emma’s ninth birthday, we invited six children to a community art studio.

No ballroom.

No professional photographer.

No family speeches.

Emma selected strawberry cake.

Before the party, she asked:

“What if no one brings presents?”

“Then we still paint and eat cake.”

“What if they like someone else more?”

“People can enjoy others without making you less.”

“What if Coco comes?”

“Coco lives with Chloe.”

“Could a different dog come?”

The studio owner had a calm golden retriever named Sunny.

Sunny attended wearing no diamonds.

Emma painted one side of his face accidentally.

He forgave her immediately.

At candle time, Emma froze.

Everyone waited.

No one urged her.

She looked at me.

“Is this mine?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“The party is for you. The people are still allowed to enjoy themselves too.”

She smiled.

Then blew out the candles.

Later, she received Chloe’s apology letter.

Dr. Ortiz reviewed it first.

Chloe wrote:

Emma,

I helped turn your birthday into a celebration where you were treated as though you did not matter. I told myself you were young and would forget. That was an excuse.

Coco did nothing wrong. You did nothing wrong. I chose attention for myself while watching you disappear in the room.

I am not asking you to forgive me or see me. I will respect what you and your mother decide.

Emma read it twice.

“Is she telling the truth?”

“I think this part is truthful.”

“Does that mean she’s good now?”

“No one becomes safe through one letter.”

“Can I write back?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

Emma placed the letter inside a drawer.

Months later, she wrote three sentences.

I don’t hate Coco. I don’t want to see you yet. Please don’t use my pictures.

May you like

Chloe complied.

That was the first useful thing she did for Emma without demanding recognition.
