Chapter 14

My relationship with Jasper changed after death.

At first, grief polished him.

I remembered only patience.

The way he braided Rose’s hair badly.

The songs he sang while cooking.

The notes he left inside Toby’s lunch.

Then the files revealed his secrecy.

The medical loan.

The threats.

The trust.

His knowledge of Frederick’s violence.

The danger he minimized around the children.

I became angry with a dead man who could not answer.

Therapy helped me stop treating anger as betrayal.

Jasper had been brave.

He had also been trained by the Beaumont family to believe problems became manageable when hidden from the people most affected.

He broke that pattern late.

Not perfectly.

His deposition contained a final message for me.

Miles gave it to me on the second anniversary of Jasper’s death.

Jasper looked tired.

“Hazel, there is a chance the plans I made will feel like another set of decisions made around you.”

I smiled through tears.

“They do.”

“I should have told you sooner. I was afraid you would spend my final months fighting my parents instead of sitting beside me.”

He paused.

“That was not my choice to make.”

“No,” I whispered.

“I hope you use what I left without feeling obligated to preserve everything I built. Keep the company if it can become honest. Sell it if it cannot. Keep the house if it remains home. Leave if it becomes a museum.”

His voice weakened.

“Do not turn my love into another place you are required to stay.”

For two years, I had kept every object exactly where he left it.

The work boots.

Fleece.

Grocery list.

I thought moving them would erase him.

After watching the message, I gave the boots to Toby.

Rose wore the fleece until the sleeves covered her hands.

I placed the grocery list inside a memory box.

Then I repainted the bedroom.

May you like

Not because Jasper no longer belonged.

Because I still did.
