Chapter 22 - THE SENTENCES
Evelyn received a lengthy federal sentence, financial forfeiture, restitution, and permanent prohibition from wildlife licensing or charitable management.
Her age and lack of prior convictions affected the term.
They did not erase the organized use of children and Elena’s confinement.
Samuel received a shorter but substantial sentence due to cooperation, kidnapping, transport crimes, and obstruction.
Greg’s sentencing drew the greatest public argument.
Some called him another victim.
Others wanted the maximum penalty.
The judge reviewed the threat to Elena, the live calls, the payment, the alternative route, Lily’s injury, the dangerous cargo, his hospital interference, and later cooperation.
Greg addressed Lily through a statement the court kept sealed unless she chose to read it.
He did not ask for custody.
“I loved my daughter and still chose a plan that used her fear, body, and trust. I kept waiting for one delivery to turn me back into a good father.”
The judge imposed prison, supervised release, restitution, and a prohibition on contact unless family court and Lily’s clinical team approved.
His cooperation reduced the sentence.
His parental relationship did not excuse the crime.
Dr. Sloan lost his medical license and received probation with home confinement for obstruction and record falsification under his cooperation agreement.
Nolan Pierce served a custodial term for wildlife and fraud offenses.
Calvin received prison for conspiracy, evidence tampering, intimidation, and the hospital intrusion.
Several lower-level employees received outcomes proportionate to their knowledge and actions.
Some were acquitted.
Others entered diversion for record violations.
The law did not punish everyone who had worked at Green Haven.
The receivership sold Evelyn’s luxury property and Samuel’s transport assets.
Funds supported animal care, victim trusts, and employee wage claims.
Green Haven was renamed North Valley Wildlife Center after public review.
The name change did not pretend history vanished.
A permanent ethics report remained available on its website and at the visitor center.
The court appointed an independent board with conservation scientists, local residents, animal-care staff, and no Ward family members.
Elena was offered a future advisory role.
She declined.
“I need to be Lily’s mother without turning every part of our life into repair work.”
She continued at the county clinic.
Lily’s trust received restitution but not a fortune.
Medical care, therapy, education, and future support were funded.
Independent trustees controlled distributions.
At Greg’s sentencing, Lily stayed in school.
She had a spelling test.
Elena asked whether she wanted to skip.
“No. Dad going to prison doesn’t know how to spell for me.”
She received nine out of ten.
The missed word was sanctuary.
She wrote santuary.
Her teacher corrected it gently.
The irony belonged to adults.
Lily only disliked the extra c.
After school, she asked how long Greg would be gone.
Elena gave an age-appropriate answer.
“Many years.”
“Will I be grown?”
“Yes.”
“Will he still be my dad?”
“That is a feeling and a legal question. The legal part may change. The feeling is yours.”
Lily kicked at a leaf.
“I don’t know the feeling.”
“You don’t have to.”
Family court later terminated Greg’s decision-making rights but preserved the possibility of adult contact initiated by Lily.
His name remained on her birth certificate.
History did not disappear because authority ended.
The seven juvenile snakes completed disease screening.
Two were suitable for eventual return near their native population.
Five remained in a protected research program because genetic and health factors made release risky.
The adult female returned to a secured habitat near the original den under monitoring.
Agent Brooks invited Lily to watch remotely.
She refused.
“Do they need me there?”
“No.”
“Then they can go without me.”
