Chapter 21 - THE FIRST TIME LEO READS THE TOOLBOX

At seventeen, Leo asked to see Emma’s red toolbox.
Police had released the physical box years earlier after appeals preserved evidence copies.
Rebecca kept it in a secure archive.
Inside were Emma’s maps, handwritten notes, old receipts, and the original letter.
IF GREG FINDS THIS, TAKE LEO AND CALL REBECCA.
Leo touched the paper.
“She knew.”
“She suspected danger,” Rebecca said.
“Why didn’t she just leave?”
“She was planning to.”
“Why wait?”
“Money. Fear. Evidence. You. Hope. Probably all of them.”
Leo looked angry.
“She should’ve left.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca did not defend Emma into perfection.
Then:
“She also did not cause what Greg did by waiting.”
Leo nodded.
He read another note.
If I’m wrong, I owe Greg the biggest apology of my life.
Leo laughed bitterly.
“She wanted to be wrong.”
“Most people do when the alternative is that someone they love is dangerous.”
He closed the toolbox.
“Do I have to keep this?”
“No.”
They transferred the documents to an independent archive and returned the empty red box to Leo.
He used it for bike tools.
The first wrench made Rebecca cry.
Leo rolled his eyes.
May you like
“It’s a box.”
Exactly.
