Chapter 25 - MARCUS’S APOLOGY

Marcus requested permission to send Mila a letter.

I said no.

Not because he lacked remorse.

Because Mila had almost no positive relationship with him before the crime. There was no bond to restore.

Dr. Cole agreed.

An apology can burden a child with someone else’s conscience.

Marcus instead wrote to me.

Everett,

I have spent a long time thinking about the six seconds I stood beside that suitcase after I saw it moving.

Not Meridian.

Not the forged consent.

The suitcase.

He wrote:

I knew enough to open it. I chose not to because I was already committed to getting everyone to the airport and I did not want another confrontation with Corinne. I told myself Mila was throwing a tantrum. That was cowardice.

True.

Then:

If you never answer, I understand.

I did not answer.

No need.

Then he sent a separate restitution payment required by sentence.

Done.

Corinne did not ask me to forgive Marcus for her.

Good.

Their sibling relationship was fractured.

Maybe repaired one day.

Not mine.

Then Mila’s contact with Corinne settled into once every six to eight weeks.

Sometimes office.

Sometimes park.

One supervised house visit only.

No unsupervised travel.

No overnights.

No school pickup.

Could this expand when Mila older?

Maybe.

No need to promise.

Then Mila asked whether Corinne could attend her seventh birthday.

We were now nearly two years after incident? She's 5 initial, could now be 7, but user prefers epilogue only months later not years. We can keep timeline overall ~20 months, she is turning 7? Not possible if 5 maybe almost 6. Let's say sixth birthday. Good.

“Do you want her?”

“Yes, but only cake.”

“What does that mean?”

“She comes cake part. Not sleepover.”

Fine.

Small party.

Backyard.

Corinne arrived for forty-five minutes.

No gift beyond an approved book.

No luggage joke.

No London.

No speech.

Mila opened book.

“Thanks.”

Then cake.

Corinne watched.

Anna’s sister Lena watched Corinne.

Tension.

Both behaved.

At one point Mila carried the framed photograph outside because she wanted “Mommy at birthday.”

I saw Corinne’s face change.

She took one breath.

Then said:

“Put it where Mila wants.”

No one had asked.

Still.

That was growth.

Lena looked at her.

For the first time, not with hatred.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Then cake ended.

Corinne left before presents.

Boundary.

No complaint.

Afterward Lena said:

“She’s different.”

“Some.”

“Enough?”

“For forty-five minutes.”

That became our unit.

Not redemption.

Capacity.

Enough for what?

Then Harbor Fiduciary annual meeting.

Trust balance up and down with markets, around six million after spending and investment performance.

No need exact every time.

Education plan.

Healthcare reserve.

No exotic purchases.

Mila asked for horse again.

Still no.

Then I updated my will again.

No new surprise.

Professional trustee.

Guardians.

Passport control instructions.

Digital account list.

Everything direct.

No hidden notes behind frames.

Lena joked:

“Anna would be disappointed.”

“I’m choosing boring.”

Good.

Then I took Anna’s original letter from bank box to archival storage after estate closure.

I kept a copy.

Mila would receive original when older.

No birthday reveal.

No secret timing.

Transparency.

Then one night Mila asked:

“Why did Mommy write secret instead of tell?”

I answered:

“She did tell some people. She also wanted originals safe because paperwork was messy.”

“Did she know she die?”

“She knew she was very sick.”

“Was she scared?”

“Yes.”

“Did she put me suitcase?”

“No.”

The question seemed random.

It was not.

She was sorting mothers.

Safety.

Anna sick.

Corinne dangerous.

Me imperfect.

Children build maps.

Then:

“Did you hit Corinne?”

“Yes.”

“Still wrong?”

“Yes.”

“Even now?”

“Yes.”

Good.

No rewriting.

Then:

“Do you love Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Corinne?”

“I care what happens to her, but not the same way.”

“Me?”

I looked at her.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

She laughed.

Good.

The last chapter before the end would close every remaining administrative thread.

No new evidence.

No new enemy.

May you like

No surprise asset.

Only final papers and one conversation with Mila about the photograph that started everything.
