Chapter 21 - THE FIRST REQUEST

Corinne waited eight months after release before asking for a therapeutic meeting.

No emergency petition.

No grandparent-right claim.

She had none as a stepparent in these facts anyway.

She asked through counsel.

Dr. Cole evaluated Mila.

“Do you want to see Corinne?”

Mila looked at me.

Dr. Cole said:

“Dad doesn’t answer.”

Good.

Mila thought.

“Not house.”

“Okay.”

“Not suitcase.”

“Okay.”

“Can door open?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy nearby?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Maybe.”

That was enough to begin planning.

I was not ready.

My opinion mattered as parent.

I could say no.

Dr. Cole asked why.

“She terrified my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“She tried to take her out of the country.”

“Yes.”

“She put her in luggage.”

“Yes.”

“Why would I ever allow contact?”

“Because Mila is asking, not because Corinne deserves it.”

That distinction hurt.

Then:

“You can still decide it is too soon.”

I waited another month.

Mila asked again.

“Corinne visit?”

There.

Not therapist prompting.

I agreed to twenty minutes.

Neutral office.

Door open.

Security in building.

No gifts.

No physical contact unless Mila initiated.

No discussion of Anna’s estate, Meridian, criminal case, money, or forgiveness.

Corinne accepted every condition.

Then the day came.

I watched through observation glass.

Corinne entered wearing plain trousers and a sweater. No heels. No performance.

Mila sat beside Dr. Cole holding Anna’s photograph.

My first instinct was to take it away.

Then I stopped.

Mila chose.

Corinne saw the frame.

Her face changed.

She did not look at the back.

Good.

“Hi, Mila.”

“Hi.”

Silence.

Then Mila:

“Why suitcase?”

Direct.

Corinne swallowed.

“Because I wanted to take you somewhere without your dad saying yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought if I got you far away, your dad would sign a paper I wanted him to sign.”

“What paper?”

Corinne looked at Dr. Cole.

Dr. Cole said:

“You can say grown-up money paper.”

Corinne did.

“A grown-up money paper.”

Mila frowned.

“Stupid.”

Corinne laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

“Why lock?”

“Because you were yelling and I wanted you quiet.”

“Bad.”

“Yes.”

“Could I breathe?”

“You could, but it was not safe and I should never have done it.”

Good.

No minimizing.

Then Mila held up photograph.

“You hate Mommy?”

Corinne’s face crumpled.

“I was jealous of her.”

“What jealous?”

“I wanted your dad to think about me without comparing me to someone he loved before.”

Mila did not understand fully.

Good.

“Mommy dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then why scared?”

Corinne cried.

“Because I was foolish.”

Mila looked toward the mirror.

Could she see me? Probably not.

Then:

“Did you love me?”

Corinne answered carefully.

“I cared about you very much, but I made choices that were not loving.”

Better than:

Yes, therefore.

Then Mila said:

“I don’t want hug.”

“Okay.”

Twenty-two minutes.

At end Corinne stood.

“Can I see you again someday?”

Mila shrugged.

“Maybe.”

Corinne nodded.

No pressure.

She left.

I sat in the observation room unable to move.

Dr. Cole brought Mila out.

“How was it?”

“Sad.”

“Bad?”

“No.”

“Good?”

“No.”

Children are allowed middle.

Then:

“Can we get fries?”

Yes.

That was enough.

Corinne requested no immediate second meeting.

Good.

Behavior.

Then Harbor Fiduciary sent annual statement.

Mila’s trust value fluctuated with markets.

Down one quarter.

No panic.

Money changes.

No fixed magical number.

Then my company offered me audit committee seat again.

I accepted.

Why?

Because stepping away forever would turn one mistake into identity.

I disclosed conflicts.

Read documents.

No leaks.

Growth.

Then I saw Marcus once in courthouse elevator during a civil paperwork hearing.

No confrontation.

He said:

“Everett.”

I nodded.

He looked older.

“That photo ruined my life.”

I almost answered.

Then stopped.

“No.”

He stared.

“You did.”

He knew.

The photograph revealed information.

His choices built the rest.

He looked away.

We rode three floors in silence.

That was the only conversation we needed.
