Chapter 5 - VICTORIA’S RING
Victoria Kensington lasted eight days before she tried to save herself.
She contacted Rebecca through a criminal attorney and offered cooperation.
The meeting took place in a private office with investigators present.
Victoria arrived without makeup, diamonds, or the confidence she had worn in Nathan’s study.
Clara attended by video from the hospital.
Victoria did not look at the screen at first.
Her attorney began.
“Ms. Kensington possesses information regarding the Montgomery trust transfers, the alleged medical record, and events at the Harrington residence.”
Clara spoke.
“Look at me.”
Victoria raised her eyes.
Clara held Gabriel in her arms.
He was wrapped in a plain hospital blanket.
No family monogram.
No Harrington crest.
Just a living child.
“Why?” Clara asked.
Victoria’s mouth trembled.
“Nathan said the marriage was over.”
“That does not explain stealing my ring.”
Victoria looked down.
“He said you had been unfaithful.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
The answer was ugly enough to sound true.
Nathan had promised Victoria a formal relationship after Clara’s removal. He told her Clara’s trust would be absorbed into the company and Victoria’s family would gain favorable terms in the European acquisition.
Victoria had witnessed the power-of-attorney signature.
She knew the page set had changed.
She introduced Nathan to the consultant who created the false vasectomy document.
She told Clara not to review foundation statements.
She also knew Nathan intended to provoke a public breakdown at the gala.
“But I did not know he would put you outside,” Victoria said.
Clara stared at her.
“You watched them drag me away.”
“Nathan said a doctor was waiting downstairs.”
“You removed my wedding ring.”
Victoria began crying.
“I was afraid of him too.”
Clara’s voice remained quiet.
“You were standing beside him.”
The investigators received Victoria’s phone.
It contained messages Nathan had not known she preserved.
One read:
Once she signs the temporary authority, we replace the limitation page.
Another:
If the child arrives before the acquisition closes, we use the paternity issue to isolate her.
Another:
Her father’s trust is the only clean collateral left.
The messages connected the affair, the forged documents, and the false paternity claim into one plan.
Victoria also revealed that Jackson had refused to delete all security footage.
Nathan ordered him to erase the study hallway, service elevator, and loading entrance recordings.
Jackson copied them first because he feared Nathan would blame security for Clara’s condition.
Investigators found Jackson staying at his brother’s apartment in Queens.
He surrendered the drive.
The footage showed Clara being dragged into the elevator.
It showed Victoria removing her ring.
It showed the guards taking her coat before forcing her outside.
It showed Nathan opening the door after she fell and ordering that police be called if she tried to return.
Audio captured his voice clearly.
She owns nothing here.
The video ended with Alexander running into frame.
Jackson accepted responsibility for his part.
“I should have refused,” he told investigators. “I knew she was in labor.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because Nathan Harrington made obedience feel safer than conscience.”
That statement did not erase what he had done.
It explained the architecture of Nathan’s control.
Everyone around him had learned to compare the cost of resisting him with the cost paid by someone weaker.
For years, the weaker person always paid.
Until the snow.
DNA results arrived while Clara was still in the hospital.
Nathan was Gabriel’s biological father.
Probability of paternity exceeded the threshold any court required.
Rebecca placed the result beside the false vasectomy record.
Clara did not feel vindicated.
She felt tired.
“He knew,” she said.
“Yes,” Rebecca answered.
“He denied his son knowing the truth.”
“Yes.”
Clara looked through the neonatal glass at Gabriel sleeping.
“Then never call this a paternity dispute.”
Rebecca waited.
“Call it what it was.”
