Chapter 4 - EVERY DEBT

By morning, Alexander’s team had mapped the skeleton of Nathan’s empire.
Harrington Global looked powerful because Nathan had arranged debt the way architects arrange mirrors.
One company borrowed from another.
That company guaranteed a third.
The penthouse was held through a property entity.
The property entity guaranteed part of the acquisition loan.
Clara’s stolen trust assets had been moved into a holding company, then pledged as collateral to reassure lenders.
Nathan had taken money protected from his creditors and placed it directly within their reach.
Miriam entered Clara’s hospital room carrying a tablet.
“I represent Mr. Rourke’s financial firm,” she said. “I do not represent you. You need independent counsel.”
Clara nodded.
“Thank you for saying that first.”
Miriam almost smiled.
“I know someone who specializes in trust fraud and coercive financial control.”
“Call her.”
Within an hour, attorney Rebecca Sloan arrived.
She reviewed Clara’s limited authorization, trust records, and the documents Nathan’s firm had filed.
“These signatures are not consistent,” Rebecca said.
“They copied pages.”
“Most likely.”
“Can we stop the transfers?”
“Some. Recovering completed transfers will take court orders.”
Clara looked toward the neonatal unit.
“Do it.”
Rebecca studied her.
“Nathan will say you were competent when you signed.”
“I was competent. I did not sign what he filed.”
“Then we prove substitution, not incapacity.”
That mattered to Clara.
Nathan had spent months building a version of her as unstable.
She would not allow even helpful people to erase her competence.
Alexander’s team contacted Harrington’s lenders.
The scandal had already reached them.
Photographs from the loading entrance were circulating privately. A guest had filmed Nathan returning to the ballroom after Clara disappeared. Another had recorded Victoria wearing Clara’s wedding ring on a chain around her own neck later that evening.
Banks hate moral scandal.
They fear covenant violations more.
Nathan had breached both.
The European acquisition contained undisclosed liabilities.
Trust assets had been represented as unrestricted company capital.
Several borrower certifications were false.
The senior lenders wanted out.
Alexander offered them a price.
Not full value.
Fear rarely earns full value.
By the end of the second day, Rourke Capital had agreements to acquire the majority of the senior secured debt, subject to closing and regulatory review.
By the fourth, it controlled the mezzanine notes against the penthouse entity.
Alexander had not purchased Nathan’s building with one dramatic phone call.
He had done something more dangerous.
He purchased the right to ask questions Nathan’s other creditors had avoided.
Every loan document opened another room.
Every room contained another lie.
Nathan called Clara on the fifth day.
The hospital routed the call through Rebecca.
Clara accepted while Alexander and her attorney remained present.
Nathan’s face appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
“Clara.”
She held Gabriel against her chest for the first time. The baby had improved enough to leave respiratory support but remained under close observation.
Nathan stared at him.
For one second, something human moved across his face.
Then calculation replaced it.
“You need to correct the story.”
Clara looked at him.
“Which story?”
“That I forced you outside.”
“You ordered security to remove me.”
“You were hysterical.”
“I was in labor.”
“You attacked Victoria.”
Clara almost laughed.
“I found you with her.”
Nathan’s eyes moved toward Alexander.
“You brought him into our family.”
“You left me in the snow.”
“I panicked.”
“No. You issued instructions.”
His jaw tightened.
“Alexander is using you to take my company.”
Alexander said nothing.
Clara looked at Nathan steadily.
“You used me to fund it.”
“That money would have returned.”
“My father’s trust is gone.”
“Temporarily.”
“You forged my authority.”
Nathan lowered his voice.
“If Harrington Global collapses, the trust recovery collapses with it. Help me stabilize the company and everyone wins.”
Clara looked down at Gabriel.
Her son’s fingers had curled around hers.
“Everyone?”
Nathan’s gaze settled on the baby.
“We can discuss private arrangements.”
The meaning was clear.
Silence in exchange for money.
Recognition of his own child as a negotiable term.
Clara’s face became still.
“Request a DNA test.”
Nathan blinked.
“What?”
“You told the world he is not yours. Request the test.”
His confidence shifted.
Clara noticed.
“So did Alexander.”
“You forged the vasectomy record too,” she said.
Nathan ended the call.
Rebecca immediately requested preservation of his medical records.
The clinic named in the documents had closed two years earlier.
The physician’s signature belonged to a doctor who had never treated Nathan.
The vasectomy certificate had been created four months before Clara’s due date.
Not three years earlier.
Nathan had built the paternity lie during the pregnancy.

He had never doubted Gabriel was his.
He simply needed the world to doubt.
