Chapter 24 - EVELYN’S NEW LIFE
Evelyn eventually dated again.
She told me before Lily met him.
Not required to seek my romantic approval.
But safety plan required notice before introducing serious partners.
His name was Daniel Reed.
Teacher.
Divorced.
One teenage son.
Background check? I wanted one.
Naomi said I could ask through co-parenting agreement only within reason.
Evelyn volunteered basic information.
No secret investigations.
I met him once before Lily.
He said:
“I know enough not to try to be her father.”
Good.
I said:
“I’m not asking for a speech.”
He laughed.
That helped.
Lily liked him slowly.
No overnight household blending for months.
No replacement dad.
No “new family” announcement.
Evelyn had learned what rushing belonging could do.
She married Daniel years later.
I attended? Maybe not necessary. Lily did. I sent congratulations through co-parent app? Human. We can say I did not attend but wished them well.
No rivalry.
Lily called him Daniel.

Evelyn never again asked her to compare.

Nothing serious for a long time.
Not tragic military widower? I wasn't widower. Divorced. Fine.
Eventually I dated a physical therapist named Claire Morgan. Need avoid same names? Fine.
Lily liked her.
No need to make everyone marry.
I did not.
Life can close without romantic symmetry.
Then one day Lily asked:
“Do you forgive Mommy?”
I thought.
“For what?”
“All.”
“No one answer.”
“Pick.”
“I forgive some things. I trust some things again. I still think other things were terrible.”
“That’s weird.”
“Adult specialty.”
She laughed.
