Chapter 23 - THE HOUSE

Evelyn wanted her equity.
Fair.
I wanted to keep the house.
Not because of victory.
Because Lily wanted her room.
Appraisal.
Marital improvement calculation.
Mortgage.
I refinanced.
Paid Evelyn the agreed share.
No courtroom auction.
No one secretly owned mansion.
Cole had contributed nothing legally significant.
His name nowhere.
The blue folder had contained a draft asking for exclusive occupancy during relocation proceedings.
That claim ended.
Property became simple.
Mine.
Then I did something Lily hated.
Renovated the back patio.
“Why?”
“Drainage is bad.”
“Because Cole?”
“No.”
Actually partly.
The door opened onto the exact patch of mud.
But drainage truly was bad.
We replaced the threshold.
Added covered mat.
Better lighting.
No dramatic memorial.
No plaque.
No:
LILY SURVIVED HERE.
A backyard is allowed to become a backyard.
She helped choose pavers.
Terrible taste.
Bright stone.
I accepted.
One winter evening snow came.
Lily stood inside at the back door.
Shoes on.
Coat.
She opened it herself.
Stepped outside.
Then came back.
Nothing happened.
No applause.
I did not mention.
Later she said:
“I knew you were watching.”
“Parents watch snow.”
May you like
“Liar.”
Fair.
